Replacing the guts should be left to a professional their is a very specific procedure involving "backlash" and spacers to get it just right.
if it's done wrong it will chew up a set of gears in a few hundred miles.

Your car has gears in it from a newer model tercel and that may very well be the reason it's broken.

I'll bet the rear axle has 3.73 gears in it

did you ever put the car in 4wd?

did the previous owner replace the rear gears at the same time ?

Yes and right after I did one time I had to replace the engine pretty sure it was a pretty existing problem. tranny was replaced by itself no other components were replaced in conjunction with it

How much would something like that cost and since it's no good should I take big one out to make sure its ten teeth

Mismatched gears the long term members here have heard this story time and time again.


Let's take a new approach and confirm what's in the back axle.If it is still 3.73 then I may have the bell/diff your after.

You may need an extra set of eyes for this test.

1st Jack up both of the rear tires so they spin freely
2nd Put a mark on one of the tires at the bottom (chalk or paint)
3rd Put another mark on the input of the rear axle (the thing the drive line attaches to)
4th Get your friend to turn the tire 10 complete revolutions while your looking at the input it should turn 3 and 3/4 turns if its 3.73 or a little more than 4 turns if it's 4.1

5th Do it twice just so your positive


I believe this test is the correct way to check gear raito without tearing the axle apart if i'm wrong someone will correct me shortley

I don't have another set of jack stands is there a way to tell the ratio besides tearing it apart

I got a opportunity to buy a 2003 Honda civic that has been rear ended and the drivers side back wheel is wobbling. Ahhhhh to dream ....and Half the bumper is falling off but a little duck tape and a good attitude I bet I could get about half way down the road with out being pulled over

I ve lost it five or six time's since my inception of this nugget and that's not counting the total nervous break downs

That is the way to check without tearing it apart

Get creative but be safe use a firewood chopping block or something. you don't need to stay under the car just get both wheels off the ground

Ok got it I turn the drive line 4 times and the passenger tire goes 1 full circle

That's not accurate enough
Turn the drive line 10 times and hope for 3.75 turns on the tire

K I think you were right 10 turns on the line equals a little over 3 1/2 wheel turns

Ok so that tells us their is a 3.73 rear gear in it as it should be for your year car.
If you were to get more than 4 turns out of the tire after 10 on the driveline it would be 4.1

With that said you may want to drain your rear diff or take the cover off of it to see if it is chewed up too.

Ok sorry about my "spamful" behavior I will take cover off and check .what if it is chewed up is that a huge job and how expensive is that gonna be ?another impossible to find junkyard gem?

Nevertheless, I was talking to the previous owner and upon telling her the goings on with regards to the tercy, she had a memory of long past which upon when the fine mechanic who put the current transmission in told her she would not be able to use the 4 wheel drive anymore .and then that was the end of that discussion .
