I have never used a puller for outer tie rods. Hitting the side of the knuckle with a hammer has always worked for me.

you hit it right here:

This works better than a puller, better than a pickle fork extractor, both of which could damage the boot. this method does not, it is the recommended method in the Ford factory manual.

Thanks so much for the picture!!! That really makes it crystal clear on how to proceed. I got the two boots today so now I'm all set.

Going to bump this thread instead of making a new one.

I want to do the ATF/GL flush on the new wagon, I assume everything should be roughly the same as it was on my FWD M/T? Just a little more paranoid doing it on the 4WD M/T.

I know it needs done because third gear is a bit klunky cold. I have to double clutch. Sometimes as well I can't shift into first until I come to a complete stop and then wait a few seconds.

I figure doing a flush and fresh fill will help her last longer!

sounds like synchros. you could try going with synthetic or a lighter-when-cold trans oil to help third gear when it's cold. there was a thread on this recently, actually.

https://tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9667

what i got out of it is that when i replace my trans fluid in the future, i will probably go with a 75-90 synthetic, preferably NS as well, to aid with cold shifting. i'm not expecting any miracles but it does sound like the guys who have switched to it noticed an improvement.
