The JDM Tercel had an optional 3A-H engine with 9.3:1 compression ratio and a variable venturi carb. Don't know about the manifold, I think they were the same.

See the two bolts on the air cleaner housing? You can tell there's a bigger carb under there. It's rated for a whole 3hp more but also has a 500rpm higher redline. There was a Tercel 'Sport 5' edition hatchback in japan that had a sweet 2-tone paint scheme with matching bumpers and the SR5 alloys. It's appeal was strictly cosmetic.
You can stick it to those Honda guys without the 4A-GE - just floor it in extra low and let the clutch out hard - you'll be laughing for about half a second while their front tires are trying to get a grip. They may be faster overall, but their first gears are alot higher than ours.

Not the classic ricer "fart-can" (lol) exhaust, but an american muscle sounding exhaust. Incredible sound. I think he said it runs 13's at Bandimere.
how can i get a hold of this person and do you have any other details?

Not that it's any of my bizness, but that Darren guy is kind of a kook. AS long as were bashing noisy things and Harleys, I'll listen to the fart can Honda any day over the stupid ass Harley. I hate when you are cruising down the road minding your own bidness and some tribe of fat ass off duty accountants comes thundering down the street on a bunch of straight piped oil leaking mid life crisis mobiles-- all dressed in leather chaps. Dudes, seriously, what says Queen circa 1974 more than leather chaps? Harleys, yuk. Sorry to bring on the negativity, but Darren started it and I got all riled up. I'll be nice now. Don't delete me. Please...

BTW, we could all get rid of our little cars and buy something faster, with air bags and AC, anti lock brakes and fuel injection, but really where's the fun in that? Shoots, a stock toyota pick em up truck obviously works better than a tercel off road with much more of the modern conveniences, but they are just so... common. This tercel club is a great little exclusive club of die hard enthusiasts. If you don't like it, don't knock it. There is a club out there for you, just move on and find it. Maybe join up with the Harley guys.

Speaking of JDM,it would be nice to have some members that live in Japan. :) With enuff reserch,we should find an aftermarket header that, with some slight mods, will fit the 3-A.Mabey something from Pacesetter? B)

eeeewww

I want nothing to do with that. I hate fuel injection. Air bags kill and anti-lock breaks are for people who don't know how to drive!!!

All the new fangled technology is designed for the brainless. I don't wanna pump the gas just wanna turn and go. I don't wanna pump my breaks cuz my brain says eeeek, i gonna hit some one.

hmmm, what ever happened to the good ol' days where a car was a car? <_< Not a computer with a heartbeat!!!

Heh. I have AC. I would not mind a new-generation airbag in my seat, just to cut down insurance a bit, ABS is for the underconfident, underskilled, and sissified. Yes, it's nice to be able to always just mash your brakes brainlessly and have no tire lock-up, but WHERE IS THE FUN AND THOUGHT PROCESS IN THAT!? I like having to finess my baby to a stop rather than molesting the brake pedal. Fuel injection can be a bear to maintain, but I appreciate it for its efficiency.

Fuel injection seems to be a setback for the power hungry. Carburetors have so much flexability and "best bang for your buck" to modify and swap. To increase fuel flow in an EFI engine, not only injectors are needed but a higher pressure pump to power them and a FMS to regulate them!!

This is true. Out of the same block you CAN squeeze more power from a carb'd setup if you jet it right, but F.I. does do a good job with efficiency of combustion.

Just how meaty would a 4 cyl sound if you put an "American Muscle" type exhaust on it? Would it wimper or potentially rumble? If I do a big horse mod job, I don't want my car to sound like a constipated weiner dog running up and down the streets.

I would not expect the 3AC to sound good with a nice exhaust...however if you installed a 16V or 20V 4age with individual throttles or carbs, high compression and big cams, you would have a hella good sounding car! :P Not very practical for the tercel tho.

Download this vid to hear what a tunned 20V 4age with open individual throttles sounds like:

I have better ones on my PC...but no way to host them. 4ages with side draft carbs sound even better.

With the 3A-C, you just get alot of backfires with a loud exhaust.

Now that 20v 4A-GE sounds like a 'real' racing engine.

Guys if I'm not mistaken a 4A-C header will be a direct fit on a 3A-C
