If your boots are crapped out...you can just use real pointy needle nose pliers to remove the snap ring...unless you have snap ring pliers. Once the ring is out you can pull he shifter and do what you need to. Depending on what you find...water or dust...try a turkey baster....vacuuming or using a stick with a bit of greasy rag on the end to remove whatever dry stuff you find. Best bet is maybe 1/2 cup of gear oil and make sure the plastic socket part is solid? I used some flannel cloth coated well with axle grease to make a boot along with an ss clamp to hold it to the shifter....needs to be well plastered with grease to keep it stuck to the trans top.

What I ended up using in the top pf the trans was 1 to 1 ratio of gear oil to grease and then a lot of grease in and around the ball socket to act as a seal...plus some kind of boot.

Ok,

I have an 84' Tercel with only ~122k on it with two previous owners. They're sisters and have only done routine maintenance on it w/o it being garaged. The boot to the shifter has been deteriorating the last few years and letting enough moisture in to cause rust and my stream crossing a few weeks ago created...standing water.

So I cleaned everything thoroughly, greased everything up and added about a 1/2 cup of gear oil with a 10% allotment of JB gear oil additive to it.

That got me to here... :)

I didn't get a picture of the coup de grat though...my friend and I putting saran wrap under the faulty boot until I get the OEM part.

Hope you enjoyed...thanks!
