I have no idea what you area trying to do, youi are not describing something farmilar. I have never found it useful to separate the gear box from the bell housing/diff housing (the FSM tells you to do it this way, tried it once, a mistake). I always pull out the whole transaxle assembly as a unit, remove the cv axles, the two side plates that bolt to the sides of the engine block, all the bell housing bolts (and starter), and a small 10mm bolt that holds the heater tube bracket, and you should be able to wiggle it back and out (dropping the rear of the trans first). sometimes it hangs up on the tunnel, and you need to unbolt the front engine mounts to get more angle so it will fall free.

Turn the wheel? do you mean the rim/tire?
Your removing the transaxle right?
Why would you put any bolts back in?

gnarnold wrote:...but when I put the upper bolts in the other side of lowe r bolts to spread transaxle from teams mission it won't spread.any ideas

what exactly is this referring to? "spread transaxle from teams mission...won't spread"

are you trying to use the bolts to separate the bell housing from the engine, or the transmission housing from the bell housing? What teams mission? won't spread? (spell check... or is this something obscene?) :P

i know what he is talking about. several of the bolt holes in the intermediate plate of the transmission have extra oversize threads. its hard to explain. look at page TA-19 or TA-21 of FSM. the clearance hole thru intermediate plate of transmission is threaded for a larger bolt 10MM (.39" dia). The transaxle is threaded for 8mm (.31" dia). if you install a 8mm bolt backwards thru the transaxle and a 10mm into the intermediate plate the bolts will hit each other forcing the transaxle to seperate from the transmission. I have separated quite a few transaxles from trannys but have never had to do this so i am not sure why they are not separating.

I assumed something like that. might be some bolts still holding it together, or they are just really stuck. I have always just pulled them apart once I got the bolts out, sometimes a couple of whacks with a soft mallet did it.

the only things i can come up with is
1. all of the bolts not removed
2. spline on forward end of main output shaft is messed up where it couples to the differential shaft causing it to be locked though just a guess as i have never seen this happen
3. forward end of countershaft is rusted to bearing in transaxle, there again i have never seen this happen

Got it apart this is what fell out of gear oil drain hole Image
I think tranny itself is fine ..do I go ahead and take the front cover / plate of transcaxle .because as I peered through the cv fill hole this is what i foundImage
There are broken teeth on that gear .can I replace that one gear .Image

I think that is the cv input hole .anyways it seems to shift fine without the transaxle on as I picked up the transaxle though I could hear more metal jingling around in there could it be that this is a problem isolated only to the transaxle?......oh please oh please .

Sounds to me like you can replace just the bellhousing/diff section of the transaxle :D
That's good news for you pull the front cover and count the teeth on the really big gear it's called the ring gear and count the gear way in the back that turns the ring gear it's called the pinion gear. Take the two numbers and divide them that confirms the gear ratio.
Report back their is a small chance I will have one.

Some ring gears have a stamp on them telling gear ratio

You will need to use nail polish or some type of paint to "mark one of the teeth" to help you count the back gear.

Good luck

a 1983 normally has 41 on ring 11 on pinion for 3.73 ratio
it must have been changed at some point
