My goal is to make my car look something like this! It isn't for everyone, but I personally love it! That is ollie86wagon's wagon by the way!

Re: Engine Rebuild Questions!
if you are going to go to that much trouble you need to start by replacing that 3ac, it is an obsolete design and there is really nothing to you can do to make it a decent high performance engine (trust me, I have tried everything and gave up on it, the 8 valve head is not capable of better performance). I would stick with the EFI, but these set ups have a lot of "wow" factor for any car they are installed into. Perfect for your "dream tercel":

Re: Engine Rebuild Questions!
Ohh trust me, I plan on it in due time! I started looking into a good bit when I had another daily driver and actually had a good lead on a 4agze, but things fell through and I got rid of the other daily and then this car (my only daily) started messing up so time and money only allows me to fix what I have at the moment. I plan on keeping this car forever and once I get it running right again, I'll probably start finding the parts I need to do the swap with and have everything ready and built/machined so I can just basically throw it in, in as short amount of time as possible. But, thats going to be saved for another time! haha

Re: Engine Rebuild Questions!
BTW, I was cleaning out the garage and found my "trophy" to low budget rebuild: it is what happens to a new piston put into a worn cylinder (out of tolerance), without over-boring. In an attempt to save some money. It took about six months as I recall, with piston slap noticeable at certain rpms. the other piston is just there for reference (it is not even from the same engine). Believe it or not, the car was still running with the piston skirt busted like this, rings ripped out and it slopping back and forth in the bore as it drove on 3 cylinders. so at least it got me home, smoking like Tijuana Taxi.

Re: Engine Rebuild Questions!
Ohhh wow!!! That is crazyy!! It couldn't have been fun! I'm glad I went with getting oversided pistons and getting it bored. I think it'll work out better in the long run. Plus a little more power never hurt anything! I'm going to get quotes for a head job and getting it bored tomorrow hopefully. I'll post back with some pricing, just for reference.
And just on a quick inspection of the exhaust valves, I seen one that had a good sized chunk missing from the side of it, on the #4 cylinder(the main one that kept fouling plugs and burning oil), I thought it looked interesting, I'll snap a picture of it tomorrow if I remember!
I'll also get some pictures of the engine bay too and post them too!

Re: Engine Rebuild Questions!
That's an awesome build Larry!! Thanks for the compliment, I just finished spraying undercoating on the fender wells and a few other places! I also brought all of the parts to the machine shop earlier today. Everything came to a total of $275.
Engine bored, honed, hottanked, ready for reassembly-$100
Head work, new exhaust valves installed, intake valves and seats reground, new valve guides and seals installed and everything cleaned up- $100(that includes decked and pressure tested too)
Flywheel resurfaced-$40
Crank polished and pilot bearing pulled-$20
Old pistons and pins removed and new pistons and pins installed on old rods-$15
He said it should be finished by Tuesday at the latest! Which is great because it gives me time to paint the engine bay!
I think it was a good deal, does that sound pretty good to everyone else?

Re: Engine Rebuild Questions!
those are excellent prices, sounds like a good place to go to have work done.
is he going to deck the top of the engine block too? If not you can do it by hand as I show in the my head gasket replacement guide in the repair guides section. Usually this not a big deal, the toyoto blocks are pretty durable, but having any slight irregularities cleaned up should make the head gasket more durable.

Re: Engine Rebuild Questions!
Yeah that's where my dad went to get his machine with done to the 396 years ago, and I know he does good work too.
I think he said he was going to check the block and if it needed he was going to do it, he's all about getting everything ready to put back together even if you don't ask him to. Which is a good thing to me because I forget alot of stuff haha.
But yeah I already had all of the stuff to do the block, and head and polish the crank, but when I heard his prices I just let him go ahead and do it

Re: Engine Rebuild Questions!
Thanks! All I used was Purple Power, an assortment of brushes, a whole day, and lots and lots of elbow grease haha! I've got to wash the underside of everything still and then it's getting taped off, primed with self etching primer and sprayed a nice chocolate brown color! All with a rattle can!
I'm just wondering if I can use a quality automotive paint for the bay, or do I need some high temp paint?

Re: Engine Rebuild Questions!
Regular auto paint is fine, it should not get that hot, consider all the plastic parts, housings and mounts in the engine compartment.
I would advise against using a dark color in the engine bay. It may hide some of the dust and grease, but when working on it, espeically late in the day, it will be like you are looking into a black hole. I would not use while either, but some ligher shade of whatever color you want on the car, so it will match but give you a nice bright engine compartment. If you plan on doing a "showy" engine compartment, with everything polished and painted (like the engine compartments I posted above), than you will like the lighter color there anyway.

Re: Engine Rebuild Questions!
Ok good, that was my biggest concern! Haha, makes sense about the plastic parts, didn't think about that!!
Well, the dark brown/chocolate could was sounding good, but now that you said something about it idk if I would like it... Maybe a light tan or something of that nature would be nice. The cars exterior is the gold/light topaz color. What color do you think would look the best? I know it's all personal preference, but any feedback and opinions help!
Thanks everyone for the help so far, I couldn't have came this far without y'all!!
