WOW! great info, Yea I hope I don't need any synchros, sounds dire for us TTsr5-4wd owners. Yea I got that EL gear, havn't had a chance to use it, the seller showed me, but it was just in his driveway. sounds like I'm gonna give a forum member a hand tomarrow pullin his tranny over in west oakland, I can get a clear picture of how this will go for me, guess I'll just baby it and keep my eyes peeled for a cheap swap.
There was a yellow sr5 here in the bay area for $500 wrecked with a good tranny, looks like sombody snatched it. Wonder who . . .

On a positive note, I did some periripheral jerry rigging/fixing. driverside window crank went the way of the transmission, 4 teeth were broke off the big cog, plus there was a bunch of grease on the inner window seal streaking the window with grease.
This is what I did to fix . . .

Works real nice, I figgure I'll just be real nice with it untill I can justify paying $50 for another one from pick-n-pull - I hate those assholes, they bought up all the cheap private yards and jacked up the price for stuff, its barely cheaper than new, and at least new usually comes with a warranty
irowiki wrote:4.1 quarts for 4WD transmission. 70W-90, 80W-90 or 90

1.1 quart for rear diff and it wants SAE 90 gear lube.

The magnets are built into the forward two drain plugs.

I just did the 50/50 flush on my 83, and now she's behaving better (first gear was a pain to get into sometimes)
so I can pretty much put 2qts 70/80-90 and 2qts ATF in the gearbox? I'm not messin with the rear end until I get this tranny hammered down.

Yeah, 2 quarts ATF, 2 quarts gear lube. Drive around for a good while but be easy on it.

Spose I could just premix it, though I'd still get it up to operating temp, maybe 6 -10 miles then get off the highway and tenderly try out 3rd and 4th.

that's on awesome fix for the stripped teeth on the window gear. really creative. spray it and the other moving internal window parts with white lithium grease, spray the rubber window channels with silicone spray, and you may never have to bother putting in another window crank.

rockauto.com sells those window regulators for just under 50.00
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Just helped jann_e_gunn pull the transmission in his little fwd, main problem we encountered was PS CV shaft refused to detach from dif and the flywheel protection flange restricted turning the tranny so as to clear the clutch arm from the firewall; didn't undo motor mounts and shuffle motor forward, got it when we realized that the flywheel flange had a diagonal piece that was rigid plastic rather than metal, slid that off the metal and the tranny freely turned, cleared and came down to have kissy face time on the ground with us!
Is mine like that? also how hard will it be to reinstall said tranny without motor mounts disconnected.
Nice kid, nice car, nice time - looking forward to getting mine on the ground and cracking the case open!

might have a lead on a used gearbox in the next city over, guy seems to know what he's talking about.

It'll be about the same, just heavier and you have to deal with disconnecting the rear driveshaft, and the 4WD selector shaft.

Also does the EL designate this as a "6spd" or is it a 5?
I think its kind of important.

Correct! The FWD manual came in 4 or 5 speeds, the 4WD manual is a 6 speed. (not counting reverse on any of them)

Damn, I feel like I'm beating a dead horse here - so mine having the EL on the shifter means I have to get another - mine is a 6spd?
There was a "5spd" meaning it didn't have the EL gear - - if I find myself up against a wall can I put the NON EL transmission in mine???

There is no such thing as a non EL tranny for a 4wd Tercel!

However you could use the guts of the 5 speed to fix yours.

Yea thats what Craig from hayward transmission rebuilders said; that I could use synchromesh gears outta a 2wd, but selector forks need to be taken from another 87/88 4wd tranny or damaged ones need braised.
Ok so im only limited by availability of the 5spd, there is no 5spd NON EL, so as long as I don't swap a 4spd or automatic I'll have all tyhe original functionality as it was designed with. this is good news, sorry for my incessant questions, I really appreciate all the input!
I'f any you's guys ever need anything I'm alwase happy to help in any way I can.
