ehf, the peart vs. copeland (or peart vs. anyone, for that matter) question is an interesting one, and one that everyone will surely have a different answer for everyone. for me, i respect the hell out of peart for his groundbreaking, powerful, tight, intricate style. however, for me, i find him to sound stiff and confined. he's simply too perfect and robotic for me. on the other hand, i feel that copeland does an incredible job of straddling a line between minimalism and wild overplaying. i think 'walking on the moon' is a great example of that. he uses rim shots and doesn't full on hit the snare for the first 3 minutes of the song, yet he's always fiddling with rim shots and the hi hat up until that point—that song is so sparse and breathes really well yet the drums are busy and interesting, and somehow fill the space without crowding it. i think that kind of thing takes taste and a flowing, natural musical instinct to achieve. combine that with how brutally hard he hits everything and his undying energy, and that's why copeland is #1 for me.
