i feel like every time any remotely political topics come up, people start drawing lines in the sand between the left and the right, democrat/republican, liberal/conservative, and i think that's an overly simplistic view of the problems that countries face. furthermore, it only leads to more squabbling and finger-pointing.

i believe this: it really doesn't matter if the current party in power is left or right. both sides have had fair kicks at the can, and both have failed to satisfy the majority of the public. i don't believe this is because of any particular political leanings though; i believe it is because the vast majority of politicians fail to be honest in their promises to the public, fail to withstand corruption, and fail to demand the same behaviour of their colleagues. so many politicians lie, cheat, and steal, are caught doing so, and then are simply slapped on the wrist and shuffled to a less publicly visible position where they still earn the same salary and still have opportunities to accept bribes and kickbacks. too many politicians' foremost concerns are not of how they can better their people but how they can personally gain from their powerful position.

the public has not only allowed but come to expect unscrupulous behaviour from its politicians, and that is the root cause of our current lousy situations, i think. not because the left or the right ruined anything, but because many of those in power--left AND right--have abused their positions, and i think we must all accept our share of the blame because we have all allowed it to go on for this long.

A fair statement DLB. That is why it has been my contention that the only way to cut corruption in government in half, is to cut the size of the government in half. With so much money at stake it does not surprise me that there are unscrupulous business and politicians that want to benefit from a piece of it. Many times it is of little consequence, but eventually you see the end result such as we have now when big business colludes with big government and causes big trouble for everyone. And guess what? no law were broken because it was the crooks that wrote the laws. Best way to solve that is just get the government out of the banking business, out of health care, out of the oil business, etc. etc. Neither Republicans nor Democrats are going to take the government in that direction, so yes both are guilty of creating a system that allows big business to take unfair advantage of it to our detriment. And it does not look like it will change any time soon.
