As an OE price comparison, Butler in Indy (and presumably several other discount Toy dealers) has the OE MT radiator for USD349 - oddly, the AT rad is only USD306; dunno why that would not be OK, as my '86 MT has the blocked-off AT tubes.
Jarf - since you are in ON, are you near Detroit or other US cities for a friend to get it? For that matter, have a friend get one from AutoZone or Advance or ___ for perhaps USD110 http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/ ... 4_266534_0_
Neu in WA - note as well.

Re: sporadic overheating?
FWIW: I got the one I put in my daughter's car from my local CarQuest shop. Been buying a lot from NAPA and AutoZone but then I remembered that the guy that "owns" the CarQuest place nearest me used to be an independent who specialized in foreign car parts. Then he joined up with CarQuest. The one I got has plastic tanks and a single row but it was a direct drop in replacement and couldn't have been easier to install. I think it was $120 and was in the store the next morning following an afternoon phone call the day before.

Petros
I am religious about changing fluids, especially coolant and brake fluid. Bottom line is I live in the land of ice and snow, the local politicians feel the only way that we can survive, is if we throw every available granule of salt at it.
No matter that it pollutes the ground water and kills plants and trees not too mention what it does to the roads and cars.
But to answer your question, the fins are corroded and falling away from the cooling tubes, while 5 years seems unacceptably short to me, I do have to consider that in reality that represents being a daily driver through thick and thin and has seen over 120,000km.
Tom, I don't have any friends on the other side of the border, maybe I need to work on that.
While it may look close on the map, the nearest border crossing is a good 4hrs away from me, so that isn't going to work either.
Anyone have a manufacturer brand name for the plastic tanked double row?
(Up here, I have to pay, up front, before they will even order a part, and if I don't like the delivered product that is my problem.
The other commonality I have found is that everyone around here seems to think that price is the only driver, and the MiC stuff is just about everywhere, getting hard to find real parts, other than at the dealer.)

Re: sporadic overheating?
Since your problem appears to be solved, I want to post this for others. First, a water pump can cause the engine to overheat without leaking. If he impeller wears out, it can fail to pump enough coolant at idle. Our terc had over 300k on the original water pump and the impeller had no wear.
The rubber gasket used around the top and bottom tanks are prone to failure every 8 to 12 years. Too bad because in a well maintained system, the rest of the radiator is perfectly good. Using chemical radiator flushes hasten the demise of this and all other rubber components in the cooling system.
Don't use an all metal radiator, they are made overseas in third world countries out of metals of questionable alloys. They can do serious damage to the head through galvanic action.
Now its been quite awhile since I changed the thermostat, but as I recall, the gasket fit around the edge of the thermostat. It can't get out of place this way. If you are not fitting the gasket over the edge of the t-stat, you aren't doing it right. I used a Toyota thermostat because the aftermarket one I bought at AutoZone didn't even look remotely like the original, but it did fit and probably would have worked.
