Danzo,

Your mechanical advance should still be working even without the vac advance. Your timing should advance with rpm increase just on the mechanical advance alone. If it does not take the cap off the distributor and spary some LPS or CRC spray lube inside and see if you can work the mech advance free by working the rotor back and forth, they sometimes get rusty and stuck.

The vac advance will advance the timing at part throttle engine loads to improve economy, but you will not notice the difference when you drive it. If your mechanical advance is not working than you will definitely feel a loss of power as the rpm goes up.

DJ, you must mean that you are running 18-20* BTDC when running with the adv. hooked up, yes? otherwise that would be 26*-28* BTDC with the adv. hooked up and you would surely be getting some serious ping then.

Yep - that's right. Everything is hooked up. I actually haven't checked the timing with the vac adv canister and vac line plugged up as the FSM suggests. I figure that if I'm getting ~18-20 degrees adv at idle (and more at medium throttle), then I'm happy. Also, my mpg speaks for itself. Upon further thought, I think I'm probably getting in the range of 34 or 35 mpg for hwy driving. 36 may be a bit of an exaggeration.

yeah, it sounds like you are probably set to approx. 10* BTDC w/o vac adv so it all adds up. just wanted to check!

What was that quote? "Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration, don't fail me now. "
I got the new vac advance up and running, engine sounds better, will have to see if mileage improves. Acceleration is better.
