If the lines fit too loose...you can use small nylon cable ties to snug the ends up...I mean really small ones. You'll need to carefully follow the RIGHT vac line diagram for your car...they are on this site...somewhere.
There are also posts where previous people have had to pass emissions tests....
There are some emissions hints online that you can find if you Goggle real well. emissions toyota tercel carb
"The approach taken to reduce these temperatures has been since 1973...
1 Retard the ignition
2 Retard valve timing
3 Add exhaust gas recirculation
Another alternative is to increase the amount of excess air.
A given amount of fuel will have to heat a larger mass of air.
The objective will still need to be to generate the same gas pressure on top of the piston.
But the temperature required to do so will be less than that for a smaller amount of air.
The lower temperature will result in less NOX"

Re: SMOG PROBLEMS
cool, i have under hood vacuum sticker, everything is routed right, problems really started when I replaced o2 sensor, it am idling way lower now and tons of fluctuation and stutter. Poor acceleration now also. I checked routing of vac lines and all looks good, I guess I will have to pick up a vac tester. I did not rebuild the head, my valve seals are in good shape I'm getting no oil in the blow by. The motor runs clean, I still have not pulled the tvsv or the egr, i did pull the egr module and it seems to be working even though filter was shot, i shoved a cotton ball in as a new filter....going to replace it soon. I did a valve job and new valve gasket, going to replace from seals( sam and main) as soon as I get sunny day, as well as timing belt. I think the o2 sensor I got is wrong, going to put old one back in and see if it runs better, cause it did before. When I got the last smog check it had the bigger vac lines on it, might have had a leek, and the old o2, i think the problem is the new o2. The sensors are expensive! dang. i think I answered everything. been meaning to check and make sure timing is right, I had a little pinging when I replaced o2 sensor.

Re: SMOG PROBLEMS
test the resistance of the O2 sensor (see FSM), it sounds like it is bad. Do not assume that it is good just because it is new.

Re: SMOG PROBLEMS
Thanks for all the help, been rainy and cold lately have not gotten anything done, been trying to get honda to start(another issue). I have all the tools and parts I need to do everything, just trying to motivate to do it. I have been meaning to get some new picks up soon also cause my tercel looks a little different now. Anyways, hope all is well with you all, i just got to keep on it. I have been driving the terc lately and leaving oil everywhere lol, still runs no matter what i guess. Joy.

Re: SMOG PROBLEMS
Still have not resolved issues with this car, disconnected o2 sensor and it runs pretty good. drove it hundreds of miles lately but temporary tag is expiring tomorrow. We just moved, about 35 miles south of Sacremento. Anyone want to buy a Tercel? it is a 83 sr5 4wd, I like this car alot but seems to always be something to fix. Honestly every car I have ever owned has been like that...broken....I have horrible car karma and I am done driving for life i think. Let me know if you want to pick up a Tercel.

Re: SMOG PROBLEMS
you need to take the time to diagnose your car properly, randomly replacing parts way too costly and ineffective. Go through the tests in the FSM on each of your components and than only replace the parts that fail the test. You might find it is just one or two minor components, fix those and you fix the problem.

Re: SMOG PROBLEMS
Yep, diagnosed egr, and egr vacuum modulator, both working, the egr tube is not clogged at all and looks brand new inside and out. Replaced filter in egr module with cotton ball.....should be fine, not like it provides any resistance to anything except open air. Could be TVSV, I didn't understand the diagnosing process in the FSM, and I cannot find the page now. I know some of the vacuum lines where to small, some were leaking, some were just bad. I replaced all lines with proper lines, no leaks, all should be good now. I think I will pass now, I have not checked, I need to get it running and then I will take it to smog place immediately.
