how would a crack in the fuel tank cause gas to spray into the engine compartment? Or perhaps you need to explain exctly what it is you are seeing, and how the car is behaving.

Do not use your fuel gauge as a way of measure fuel consumption. ON my car I get from full to the half way mark about 120 miles, and from the half way mark to empty I get another 200 miles (300 to 320 miles per tank). So the fuel gauge is not accurately calibrated to fuel consumption.

If you have a leak somewhere on the tank you should be able to find by jacking up the car and inspecting with a flash light the lines (there is also a plate under the carpet in the back that will allow you see the top of the tank).

Either way you need to isolate the source of the fuel leak before you can fix it.
