I'm glad to be reading this now before the overhaul, but not glad that I already have some reman's coming from rock auto. I've run remans on other cars in my world (festivas, metros, etc.) without a problem, but do understand these aren't tercels. A friend of mine simpy won't give up on his 89 subaru wagon 4wd even though it eats axles faster than he can keep up. I've never heard of tercels doing this, but I am fairly new to the vehicle.

I think at least part of the problem with remans for the Tercels of the era is that they use a kinda unique outer joint (tulip ?). There are some comments on these by more tech-astute folks than moi.
Also - many places appear to have new axles for virtually the same price as remans...there was a thread just recently on this pricing structure and sources.

I'm a new owner and first-time poster.

I have a significant oil leak on my '83 4wd manual at the passenger side of the transaxle where the drive shaft attaches. I'm assuming I need to replace some kind of seal. How do I find out what parts I need to buy in order to remedy the problem?

Also, the responses above are contradictory with regard to what special tools need to be acquired / borrowed / improvised for the removal and re-installation of the half shafts.... Some clarity here would be very much appreciated!

Also, do I need to do anything with the wheel end of the shaft in order to facilitate its removal from the transaxle?

Thanks!

Welcome to the list.

all your questions are answered in the archives, do some searching. No special tools are needed, just a large socket and a breaker bar or impact wrench to get the axle nut off. the axles can come out by just removing the lower ball joints on the strut and swing them out of the way far enough to allow the spline to clear (there is a procedure thread on this forum). Installing the new seal can be tricky, but can be done with common tools if careful, read the FSM procedure on the seal installation (do not follow the FSM procedure to remove the axle, they have you remove more parts than you need to).

Any auto parts store can look up the seal part number and order it for you, or you can pay extra and order it from a Toyota dealer.

Good luck.

Welcome to the Club! This is a great place!
I echo Petros' remarks - lots of info available with a Search.
One thing on the seal, though - see http://www.tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtop ... eal#p41102. Some parts vendors show a different one; this is the correct seal. It is usually an order-item.
Get GSP new axles - Advance and others have them for virtually the same price as the various remans.
The seal installation can be tricky - go slowly and read the literature.
