The reed valves work by using the exhaust pulses....when there is a partial vacuum...air goes into the tube and thus into the exhaust...otherwise they close.

If you have what sounds like an exhaust leak...check for stuck reeds??

I had part of a grasshopper stuck under a reed...now the air can source from inside the air filter only.

I'm interested in how these stupid emission controls effect performance, here's what I plan to do with my 84SR5- cut off the thing coming back from the cat converter (which does nothing useful to a cat by the way) and plug it, then plug the end going into the intake with a head vent filter.Then I'll see if it runs better plugged. If some of you already know how this experiment will turn out, lemme know. I think it enters through a carbon filter, otherwise unrestricted, right under the carb in the origional design. The origional designers of this engine were geniuses, but they where under certain legal restrictions that we may not be
