if you have gasoline in the motor oil, the fuel pump needs to be changed asap! You will smell it on the dip stick and if bad the oil viscosity will be very low. Either case change the oil too.
fuel pumps are available from most autoparts stores, several models of toyotas used this same pump, they care common and not to costly. Really cheap from Rockauto, if you have the time to wait to get one. Many Autozone, Oreiley's, or NAPA stores will have them in stock, or can get them same day or next day.

Re: Carburetor gas leak
Forgot to come vack with an update. I replaced the fuel pump as suggested and it fixed the gas smell. I havent had time to extensively test it but it seemed good. I still kind of want to rebuild the carb because of how much the car diesels when I shut it off but I'll probably atleast put it off for now.

Re: Carburetor gas leak
glad to hear the fuel pump fixed it.
dieseling can be caused by incorrect ignition timing, running rich, vacuum leaks...i'm sure there are other things too. i would check the timing, look for vacuum leaks, and check the float bowl level through the sight glass on the front of the carb. check the fuel level both when the engine is running and off. i had one carb that would flood while running and then level out once the engine was off.
was it also dieseling before you replaced the fuel pump?

Re: Carburetor gas leak
Well, finally got back in town and started driving the tercel regularly again and it seems the fuel pump didn't fix as much of the problem as I had hoped. I really am thinking it is the carburetor and so now I'll probably have to do the rebuild.

Re: Carburetor gas leak
I had a fuel pump start leaking recently. It actually sprayed fuel on to the firewall.
