Took a fresh picture, cleaned it off a bit. Im pretty sure this is whats left of the control arm connecting to the transmission. Also Petros, i dont see it possible to break the control arm, either. Unless you severely damaged the belly of the vehicle which is not the case. Not sure how or why this was removed, hoping for the best.

This is viewed from the drivers side. control arm facing toward ground. to left is front of car.to the right is back

I honestly cant tell, but it doesnt seem frayed like it was cut. Theres also a point on each end of the linkage arm where it can be unscrewed.

this one i scraped from the yard, kinda rusty and crusted.

I can see the spedo cable on the corner of the photo.
Take a set of channel locks and see if the 4wd shaft moves back and forth does the 4wd light come on in the dashboard when you move the shaft?
Perhaps it's not the original tranny and install was incomplete.
All the more reason to confirm gear ratio

Thats what i plan to do next, Im going to try and contact they guy who owned it before me, maybe i can get some answers. He said "broke off", but this was the guy who owned the tercels brother who sold me the car, and never actually drove the thing at all. Ill try to engage the 4wd from underneath.

Oh! now I think I see what is going on, you should be okay. that thing pointing down is the end of the tie rod that used to be on the end of linage from the lever to the selector. The linkage is broken off the rod, not the seletor shaft. So the lever arm should still be present. this could happen if the tie rod was left hanging down, or comes off the lever end and hangs down, and than strikes the ground while you are driving, and breaks off. there should be a 12 mm nut on the back side of selector lever at the tie-rod end, you may need a narrow tip vice grip to hold the other side still while you undo the nut on the back side of the lever arm. I have found this is rarely necessary, once the 12mm nut is broken loose it just spins right off with your fingers.

You should be able to put it in 4wd by pushing the lever forward (it should be in the 2wd position by the looks of it), and test the front and rear diff ratio.
