Re: Hello all
I thought that too until I started thinking about 'well if it tears up the diff to drive on solid surfaces in 4x4 mode, wouldn't it also with one of the front outputs not making contact on the ground'
I heard that on the p'n'p dist, if'n I can't find the prescribed wreck, is there a way to test for good working electrical coponents? Do they use points like contact breakers? what actually fails with a dist?
I had a 89 tempo that never clicked and one day I started it, reversed out of my parking spot, shifted to [D] and there was no drive action, though that was a FORD, and I really don't suspect this one to blow out on me anytime soon - just sayin. Also I sent that car to the bone yard like the 22 year old idiot I was over a $50 CV axel, albeit I paid $50 for the car, but still.
So the 3A-C's were common amongst our cars cousins?
The CV axel noise is intermittent, and may be more due to bad front end alignment, I noticed some horrendous knocking in the front end today when its sits still (turning the wheel left and right), not while underway, just at a rest, put it up in the air and tried to recreate the same thing to no avail, since I don't know jack about front end alignment I suppose I'll just make a day of it at pep boys, AC recharge and alignment.
Also was approached by a tercel 4wd owner the other day at work, I pointed her this way, she was so thrilled to see another one out in public, had a million questions but I was on the clock.

It takes more fossil fuel resources to produce new vehicles than it would take to maintain and fuel any 70's or 80's vehicle for a million miles.

Re: Hello all
all parts in the dist is solid state, check the FSM, it should give resistance across the contacts to check the parts are within spec. best way to test it is to install it (requires you get it in correctly and you set the timing) and than drive it. This would also teach you how to swap out the distributor if you needed it. In side is a pick-up coil, a transistor trigger, and the ignition coil it self is contained within the distributor. also, occasionally the internal bearing fails (you wiggle the shaft to make sure it spins true without grinding). If you have a questionable ignition, any of the components, a simple and effective "test" is to swap in your spare distributor assembly. this will rule out the pick-up, the transistor, and the coil. both the 3ac and the 4ac (from the same year corollas) use the same distributor, as most other external parts.
it is pretty rare than anyone had a cv axle fail on a Tercel, it does happen, but almost always they just wear out, getting worse as they wear (sloppy).
if you have an intermittent noise up front that is not likely from alignment, but it could be a bad wheel bearings. describe it in more detail (kind of noise, frequency, what you or the car is doing when you hear it).

Re: Hello all
Well I coulda just burned a 20 and been better off, pep boys said front end is fine/bearings are fine, but that my muffler is got a loose baffle (no shit sherlock) and my brake master cylinder and power steering rack are both leaking and the undercarriage is soaked in oil.
I am disappoint, they act like they never seen a 221 thousand mile Japanese car before . . .
Got some pretty decent LED's for the side markers for $11 a pair at oriliey's - they cast off nicely, but wouldn't blind a flanking driver if they were in line with the beam path.
P'n'p didn't have any 3a-C or 4A-C engine cars, there was a 4A-E with a similar looking setup but I didn't grab it cause I wasn't sure it'd work. but it was def wrecked, looked like the passenger front corner wedged under the tandem axel of a semi trailer, the carburetor was smashed back and down into the exaust manifold - nearly shoved stright through the firewall and inner fender, pretty gnarly.

Re: Hello all
I like that idea, my sister is 2/3 ASE cert she needs some field EXP.
But nothing between redding, CA and south portland, OR, I'll also be on the road around christmas to eugene area.
How do you even look up non - p'n'p pick your own part style wrecking yrads on the net these days? used to be every parts store in the area knew, suppose its still that way, but I'm not in eugene to ask about, and even then, with p'n'p around the little guys are dying out by the 100's every year.
So sad, walking through the oakland yard today, so many vehicles that are new to me, still have that new car smell, puddles of piss in them and destroyed like some perverted mechanized victim, a loathsome society we live in.
Dunno how all this sounds, drinking like a fish for 31st Bday.

Re: Hello all
be prepared for regular major repairs on the Audi. they make nice cars, but unfortunately, like most of the other German cars, they are not particularly reliable, nor easy to work on. That is why their resale value drops off fast after they get to a certain age (and an '84 is WAY past the "use by" date).
If you own an Audi, you will need two spare cars to make sure you always have something to drive.

Re: Hello all
I seem to have a little more valve train noise and some blowby than I did before oil change . . .
Rings? other possible is head gasket right?

Re: Hello all
an oil change shouldn't do that. i would check compression. if the compression is good, try a seafoam oil treatment. if you have low compression anywhere, try restore. i just used it in our f-350 that was burning a ton of oil and it seems to have made a big difference. i need to do go through a few more tanks of gas and do another compression test before i'm totally sold on it though.

Re: Hello all
My friend said the dude probbaly spiked the oil to hide it; I checked it after test drive, again when I got home and now after an oil change (though last weekend we drove up the mountain fully loaded) removed the cap with it running and it spewed oil all over me and the engine compartment, also there's a noise from the valve train like RMP screeching.
Guess I'll borrow a PSI tester from my boss.

Re: Hello all
Cherry Bomb is no more, I sold it to a crazy lady that claimed she was the one that wrote all of Eddy Vedder's greatest hits, that she was drinking tequila with Prez Obama and he hit on her (she's in her 60's) but she gave me $40 more than my asking price; $980 - even drove it to san francisco after I warned her about how poorly it drove at low speeds.
So thats what's happenin with me!
