Searching for that hard to find part....
Searching for that hard to find part....
note: I've rewritten this due to having the same negative experience 3Xs looking for some parts.
Here is a good place to START looking for USED PARTS:
http://dir.yahoo.com/business_and_econo ... arts/used/
You will find MOST of the USED parts SEARCH websites.
..............
If you are looking for a used part and not a new OEM or remanufactured part...there are the recyclers....if a part you want is rusted or tends to rust out...then you'd probably want to focus on areas outside the rust belt
Some areas of the country tend to have lower prices than others...making it feasible to order from a good distance away.
There are quite a few websites that allow a parts search such as.....
http://www.car-part.com/ < lists the yards and usually gives an email or 800 number. A good research site to find the kinds of parts available and expected prices for used parts.
The general parts request is a waste of time...if you want a part that is part of the front door assembly for instance...find places that have a door...then use a few of the 800 numbers to ask about the part you want. Deal with each recycler individually. I've ordered several parts for different vehicles and I screen people by how sensible they act on the phone...so far I've been treated fairly.
*If you use the general parts request and are looking for several parts and call more than 3-4 places they will stop giving you honest answers about the parts...you'll get comments about having crushed the car, etc. IMO....this is a networked bunch of PITAs....you don't get competitive bids.
Other sites require you to fill out a form and give an email address...
Some of these sites use similar software, but I think that for the most part they cover different groups of recyclers.
So searching from several sites isn't a bad idea...and is the best chance to find the part at a good price near your area.
I'm fairly sure that the prices quoted ARE NOT competitive bids...I think they can see the prices you've been quoted. So when you start looking for the best price...you'll probably get stonewalled and jacked around. Can't this say for sure about ALL of these search sites...just the one listed above.
As far as I know, if a recycler has a part, they will expect you to provide a credit/debit card number before they will ship the part....and usually they will want you to order it before they will remove it from the car. If the part isn't in good condition...then they are supposed to NOT ship it.
The 800 numbers are probably the best method to use...though email works for the one's that reply that way.
Most parts will be priced from 1/3 to 1/2 of Toyota's new parts price?
Not only does Toyota charge too much for parts....the recyclers then also charge too much.
On the other hand...at least new parts can be found for a car that is maybe 21 years old.

Online sources for NEW Toyota OEM parts :
http://www.toyotadiscountparts.com/'
Good place to compare new vs used prices...prices might be low enough to justify buying new parts?
http://www.autopartspeople.com/
Best prices?
Online sources for NEW aftermarket parts :
https://www.rockauto.com/'
* seems like a promising online order source...they inform you as to expected shipment delays...though I keep running into high shipping charges.
http://www.napaonline.com/
* parts ordered online were here in 2-3 days...shipping reasonable....depends how near you are to a distribution center?
http://www.carparts.com/
* the same as JCWhitney...have many aftermarket accessories
http://www.cardone.com/English/Club/pro ... efault.asp
* Cardone's online catalog
http://www.partsamerica.com/
* this is Advance AP...they want you to have the part sent to a store...if that store can't get the part...you might get free shipping...UPS...use a street address only.
http://www.autozone.com/
* I no longer order parts online from Autozone...your experience might differ.
http://www.importedcarparts.com/
* decent selection
http://www.maximumautoparts.com/ ??
http://www.autobarn.net/index.html ??
http://www.instockauto.com/ ??
...there are other new parts sources not posted
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It would be a good idea to take any measurements and so forth from the part you are wanting to replace in order to be more likely to have the right part shipped....shipping costs are a fair % of your cost.
* This info is the best I have and it might not be totally accurate...good luck.

Re: Searching for that hard to find part....
the government, with the encouragement of the car companies, put harsh chemicals on the roads to make sure all our cars return to the earth, in the form they were once found as a rough ore, looks like dirt.
There is no interest by the manufacturers to allow the cars to last too long, they have already saturated the market, so their only hope of future sales is to make sure all the existing cars slowly disappear, back into the ground from where they came.

It spreads the chemicals with those black heliocopters.
I've been able to preserve Goldie with the large Heavy Duty Reynolds Wrap sheets I spread over her at night ...

I have heard that Reynolds was going to stop making aluminum foil.
I was wondering where I was going get material to make my hats out of if foil is going off the market. Better stock up now!
