1988 Terc 4wd MT For Sale Inviting Offer

This forum is for cars that run, or at least are close to running. This isn't for parting out complete cars.

1988 Terc 4wd MT For Sale Inviting Offer

Post by fawmaine »

I am second owner of this Maine based car. Mileage is 218,300 +/-. I have service records that first owner gave me and believe the file to be complete. I have kept records during the ten years I have driven car. The cars inspection sticker expires at the end of August. I would like to have it gone by then. I hope to be able to take pictures under the car in a day or so. The car requires welding to restore the frame rail on the left and possibly on the right as well. Both front fenders, rockers, & rear quarters need attention. There is a crack in the windshield. Insurance can possibly replace if done by policy expiration in September. I have complete front bumper to replace rusted original. Rear bumper should be pulled to paint after patching some small holes. I hope to have mechanic confirm if indeed there is a tranny leak or other problems. I am in Portland Maine. The car can be seen where parked at rear of my building. Driving after August will not be legal. I would be glad to answer any questions. I would prefer that I be contacted by phone 7 days a week 9 AM to 9 PM EST at 207-210-6015. Machine will invite message and then you can state purpose of call. Thank you very much. Ned

From your earlier posts it sounds like your car has a lot of rust. If you have frame problems, that is pretty serious.

What are you asking for it? And can you post pictures.

I hope to take photos this evening or tomorrow. I will upload asap. I am open to an offer. I want it to go to a forum member if possible. A local welder
quoted $1200 to do work on frame rail(s). In doing so it suggests that cars life can be extended. I recently had a new clutch installed, There is a used
rear cluster that is recent. Engine runs strong, no smoke that I can detect and the tranny has not given me any problems. A Terc owner in NH showed
interest last Fall but not in recent talks. Where are you located ? If you are in New England near me I could get to you.

Thanks, but I am not interested in your car. I live in Canada. Something needing that much extensive work would not pass inspection here to be certified. I don't recall any forum member taking on that huge a repair. Good luck.

Rear cluster? Do you mean rear differential (pumpkin)?

I really appreciate your reply. As to query about the use of the term cluster you are right. I replaced the gears in the rear differential. I am going to try and get the car on the lift to take better pictures of the frame rails.

Addenda to original post. These are the first bunch of pictures. I will upload a few more later today. I get a lot of feed back from mechanics that see the car underneath and generally it is their opinion that the car is not too bad for its age. I have no place to keep it off the road that situation dictated by
low income. It was my hope to wire brush the undercarriage and paint the area but I have no place to get it up in the air. It is my hope that someone in this area will save it. It is worth more than what the yards are offering which so far has been less than $150.00 . Viewers can PM me and call at the phone number included.

I am posting a few more pictures. If anyone is in the least bit interested please let me know if there is a particular area of the car that you want photographed. This car has been a daily driver in New England for many years and has been inspected in Maine, a state with rigid inspection
guidelines. I am not with enough cash flow to keep this ride going. A forum member who could detail the undercarriage by scraping the surface rust and then painting should be able to give the car a new lease on life.

I appreciate members that take time to check out my post. I would like to invite any suggestions as to how to avoid the scrap yard. I was able to get the car up on a lift yesterday and took the enclosed pictures. They are captioned and I don't know if they are seen. I have no means to part out this car. I
have been driving it every day and could get it to someone in my area by driving it there. My inspection sticker expires at the end of August. Take a look at these photos. Again you can call me in Maine (EDT). 207-210-6015. Thanks.

Everything is repairable, people restore cars all the time, it depends on the individual, are you mechanically inclined, can you fabricate and if you have a welder can you weld? If you have to pay someone to do all your work then the cost factor comes into play, is it really worth it? or am I better off to find another car, but if you have the resources , know how and equipment to do it yourself, then I say Go for it.

Despite the rust, I have helped the owner find parts for his Tercel4wd in the past. I know he has maintained it very diligently and it should be in excellent mechanical condition.

Most of the rust does not look like too much a problem, just need to clean it up and either seal it with paint or apply undercoating. It appears there are only a few places that should be welded. If you can weld so you can fix it yourself, this would be a good, well maintained T4wd to save. It actually looks very nice in the pics. It would be hard to find one with an interior in that good a condition.

To oldfaithful and petros: Thank you for your comments. I am not sure what I am going to do. I am not able to weld but may be able to meet the expense of getting it done. I hope to get in touch with the body shop instructor at a local voc tech and I will get some estimates from some shops.
I will update the forum as things go along.

If only fawmaine and jaredheath weren't so damn far apart- the two could make a damn nice t4! As for rust, as far as I'm concerned, you don't fix it, you only patch it.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!
