Bearing help near Seattle

Post by tercle »

I am looking for a shop around Seattle that is good at installing wheel bearings.
I am planning to pull the axle or knuckle and taking it and the bearing and seals to the shop.
The vehicle is a 1985 4WD wagon.
I'm pretty sure it's the right rear....

Any recommendations?

if it's a rear axle bearing that you are replacing, you can remove the axle shaft with the bearing on it at home. just take that with the new bearing kit to any shop and they will remove the old bearing and press the new one on. then you can take it home and reinstall it. most shops charge about $50 for this service, doesn't take long.

I have been getting a variety of responses from shops out here.
I am planning to bring them the axle shaft and new bearing and wheel seal*.
Planning on bringing them the axle shaft without cutting off the collar, so they know which way to put the bevel.

One said 2 hours labor $200+
One said 30 minutes about $50.
A few said they don't work on anything that old.
None really inspired much trust.
I will probably go with the 1/2 hour $50 guys.
But I was hoping there was a place around Seattle that a Tercel owner recommends.

*What about the axle shaft seal?

If you are bringing them the axle it is definitely NOT a two hour job. 1/2 hour sounds about right.

agreed with marlene, 1/2 hr at $50 is about normal.

the rear axle seal does not get install on the axle shaft. it gets installed in the rear axle housing. check the FSM for the exact installation depth.

The shop that quoted 50 bucks last week now says they won't do it with customer-supplied parts or axle shaft already removed.

So, still looking for somebody who can do this near West Seattle/ South Seattle

many NAPA auto parts stores have a machine shop in the back, they can do it. they do not work on cars but are set up to do exactly this kind of work for their customers. Usually they want you to buy the parts from from them, (their prices are fair, if you have AAA auto club member you get 10 to 15 percent discount). often they have the parts in stock. If you are a regular customer and you already have the bearing they might do it for you. I had the local NAPA do mine, they put the collar on backwards, I pointed it out to them, the replaced it from their stock as I waited without comment. the collar has to go on correctly or it is possible the seal will not be riding on the smooth part of the collar.

Many (not all) Autozone stores also have machine shops that can do it. I have also had the tire store Les Swchabe do a front bearing for me. I just showed up with the steering knuckle and asked if they would press it in for me, I was also a regular customer (tires and alignment) at that store. they did it while I waited.

Unfortunately, I bought a TIMKEN bearing from Rockauto yesterday.
If I had a time machine, I would go to NAPA.

Never expected to have this problem.
Had the same job done on a Mopar 7.25 axle shaft, down in Vancouver about 10 years ago.
Seemed like the same basic design.
Well, I have a couple weeks to find a place.
