Could the "stumble and die" symptom be due to the lack of additional fuel from the now disabled AAP? That would cause a possible lean condition on acceleration when cold which could result in stalling.

As for two bad TVSV's, when was the "new" one actually manufactured?

Think you're on the right track, since the symptoms have changed. Maybe time to try out that MB vacuum switch-over valve I gave you this past summer??
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

I have personally given up on the AAP. I installed a new AAP in my 87 and a few weeks later it was leaking gas into the TVSV. Capped it off and car runs fine, I can even drive it in sub 20 F weather if I'm easy on the gas for the first few blocks.

no AAP = Stumble and die makes sence

TVSV Do ya think a new OEM part really has a shelf life? I suppose it could

As to the MB vacuum switch perhaps one day when i take the car back from my 82 year old mother. For now the less buttons inside the car their are the better for my mom

let's hope it's able to cycle through it's morning carthritus issue otherwise its running as good as ever :oldgeek: :oldgeek:

i don't think age alone will kill a TVSV. from what i can see by the few i've taken apart, the wearing out is caused by the metal cylinder sliding up and down in its hole -- every time the car warms up and cools down, up and down the cylinder goes. eventually one or the other wears a bit and they no longer seal as well as they need to. when this happens, the TVSV will never reach its final 'full engine temp' stage, which activates the choke opener and i forget what else.

so if a TVSV has never been used, it seems like it should work just fine unless there is a manufacturing fault.

Dan, try disconnecting the carb base heater and sticking the flapper for the warm/cold air thing to the cold position (by disconnecting the vacuum valve)

Did you try the EBCV?
