Re: Tranny Broken! Forgot 4wd on-_-
the tranny itself is interchangable between years 83-88
the transaxle is not because 83-85 have 3.73 and 86-88 have 4.1 gear ratio differentials
most think the combined unit (transaxle/tranny) is the tranny but they can be seperated
if you tranny noise stops when you push in the clutch then the inner input shaft bearing is bad
if it does it all the time its most likely one of the two front bearings going bad
if you get tranny out before it blows up you can save it and take it apart (video on youtube for that)
then maybe even fix it (video for that too)
at least save the tranny for future parts

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Re: Tranny Broken! Forgot 4wd on-_-
also its much easier to remove just the tranny, leaving the transaxle in place
i would only remove transaxle if clutch needed replacing
look in "Repair Guides" for one of several write-ups about removing tranny only

you have to lower the back of the engine to allow the bell housing to clear the tunnel. remove the radiator and hoses, you might also loosen the front engine mounts to allow the engine to tilt furhter back. also, make sure all of the hoses and electrical connectors are not pulled tight preventing it from tilting further back.
There is a 10 mm bolt that holds a heater hose bracket that has to come out or it will prevent you from separating the bell housing from the back of the engine (it is a pia to reach, on the right side of the bell housing under the fuel pump on the front edge of the bell housing).
verify you have everything disconnected, (shift lever, bolts, hoses, linkage, clutch cable, etc) and than shake the output shaft back and fourth and usually it will drop free. put something under it (like a jack or carpet) so it does not fall out and break something. Usually once you get it backed out about an inch, it will fall freely out, rear end first, pull it back and front will fall free. However, I have seen a few times that we get the trans disconnected from the back of the engine, but the bell housing will not clear the tunnel and it is hung up. I do not know what causes this, it was a real pain to finally free it, never had this on any of my Tercel4wd, but I was helping another forum member and we could not figure out why it would not clear the tunnel (something different about that particular tercel).
Good luck.

Re: Tranny Broken! Forgot 4wd on-_-
I have found that the dowel pin on the passenger side of the bell housing can rust in place and you can't separate the engine and trans sometimes. The one on the drivers side rarely rusts because of oil leaks. Double check everything like Petros suggests. Do you see a gap at all when you try to move the trans? If not then both dowels may be stuck. Then it is a matter of pry bars and such to work it free. But be careful not to damage the bell housing. You can sometimes work through the starter mounting area to get one side free.
Let us know how it works, good luck.

Re: Tranny Broken! Forgot 4wd on-_-
something occurred to me overnight: sometimes the stub axle on one of the front axles fails (shears off) and it will not drive in 2wd, acts like transaxle is shot, but it is just one of the ends of the cv axles that shear off. so before you pull the trans, you will want to verify that your trans-axle is indeed shot. drain the trans, front diff and transfercase gear oil and see if you get metal flakes, broken gear parts, etc. out of it. If it is clear gear oil your trans might be okay. You have to drain the trans anyway, than pull the front axles next (they have to come out anyway) and inspect the ends. If you find it is just the cv axles, than you saved yourself a lot of work. If the cv axles are good, than proceed to remove the trans per the repair guild thread in this forum (the FSM procedure is extra work and not as easy). Than carefully remove and inspect the front input shaft. Sometimes (if you are luckly) it fails and you can just replace the input shaft. Note that if there are broken parts in side the trans you will have to flush them out.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Nexts step is to put the other one out of the 87 and put it back in the empty 86

Juste open front diff and i juste fund the probleme : ring gear and drive pinion are all grind. The rest of the transaxle/tranny should by good?

get a magnet on a stick and slide it in some of the bottom most holes of the tranny to get pieces out
