Fixing a non functional temperature display.

Mine has worked very briefly (and who knows how accurately), and seems dead for the most part. I changed the sending unit to no avail. Is the next step a disassembly of the dash?

check the wire that goes from the front of the head to the firewall. it may have rubbed through the wire sheath somewhere, causing it to ground out on the engine or something.
