4afe questions
4afe questions
So will a 4afe motor take a 3ac intake so I can put a weber on it? Or how hard is it to make the 4afe work in my 85 wagon?
I KNOW...

Re: 4afe questions
The 4AC and 3AC intakes are identical, no issues there. The 4A-FE is a completely different beast since it's fuel injected from the factory. A 4AF is carbureted and would be able to run your weber, but there are other issues involved in swapping the 4A-F than just the intake and the exhaust.
I'm working on swapping a 4A-FE into my T4WD now. I've made custom cooling pipes for both the upper and lower cooling system, a custom header, custom alternator bracket to swap which side the alternator lives on, a custom intake to put the throttle body in the front, custom fuel system which involves a low pressure carb pump to move fuel from the main tank up to a surge tank in the engine bay, and an EFI pump in the engine bay to get high pressure fuel to the fuel rail.
Last, but certainly not least, the 4AFE is taller than the 3A-C, so you either need to drop the engine and transmission cross members, which will mess up steering geometry and change driveshaft angles, or you have to cut a hole in the hood to clear the oil cap, which will later involve a hood scoop/power bulge to close everything up.
I'll be posting up pictures of this adventure when I get it more wrapped up.

Re: 4afe questions
you will also need a full custom exhaust header and system to make the 4AFE or 4af work in the Tercel since the exhaust comes out on the other since of the engine, and you will either have to convert to a distributorless ignition system, or cut a large hole in the fire wall right where your heat core goes to make room for the distributor location on off the end of the camshaft.
On the plus side, the 4afe is designed as a high torque, good fuel economy motor, so it actually would be a good match for the Tercel4wd.
As I recall the 4afe/4ad just fit under the hood, it was the 4age that is taller and needs a hood cutout. There was an old thread where someone got a 4afe out of "nova" (GM corrola) to work in his Tercel.

Re: 4afe questions
This is a trip, the wife's FX says 4A-FE under the hood, its def not a fuel injected - its the nummi 87 corrola/nova, why does it say 4afe?
It takes more fossil fuel resources to produce new vehicles than it would take to maintain and fuel any 70's or 80's vehicle for a million miles.

Re: 4afe questions
There is a factory 4A-F that is carbed, unless someone deliberately swapped a carbed engine then it probably has the valve cover from an EFI model.

Re: 4afe questions
Yup, same as a 4A-C except the L means longitudinal.

Re: 4afe questions
Is it the same block?
Like could I stick it in my tercel if I had/wanted to?
Just a purely hypothetical question.

Re: 4afe questions
yes, the 4ac I have in my Tercel came out of a transverse engine corolla. "hard" points on the block are the same so engine mounts, bell housing and trans braces all bolt up the same.

Re: 4afe questions
Notice how the underhood emissions control sticker says OBD Exempt. The 88 Corolla with the 4A-F already had OBD so these last Corollas with the 4A-LC were exempt as well as the Tercel wagons through the '88 model year.

Re: 4afe questions
Its is an 88 year, but it is all 87 parts, its a december NUMMI car, damn headlights are the 9004 and lots of older parts.
It may have a OBD port for a jumper situation as described in the haynes, but I've not looked for the pigtail yet.
