Irksome horniness

Post by drege »

Got your attention?
Yea that doesn't happen when I push the horn.
I'm 6'3" so I need the wheel seated in the upright most position, where the horn doesn't work, every position of the steering tilt the horn will work, except all the way up.
It is the wire, I've jammed my fingers up in there and wiggled all the whole honking, just curious is anyone else has ever encountered this, or if this is a special kind of screwed up.
It takes more fossil fuel resources to produce new vehicles than it would take to maintain and fuel any 70's or 80's vehicle for a million miles.

sounds like there is either a loose connection or perhaps worn insulation allowing it to short in the up most position. You can also run an extra wire to replace the suspect one, rather than try and track down the problem with the wire bundle.

Most of my cars never had working horns, I just got used to doing without. I communicate using hand signals if the need arises.

When my horn was working intermittently i had to take the steering wheel off (remove cover and large nut and then shake/pull it off) and but a small ring of plastic (used a cut up yoghurt container) behind the circular metal contact that is on the steering column as the metal gets worn after a while and the switch on the center of the steering wheel will not reach it anymore. Perhaps this could help you?

Make sure you mark with tape exactly where your steering wheel is at dead center to make alignment easy when you put it back on.

I'm rolling with it tilted down about a 1000th of an inch, just enough and my legs don't really notice the change, it was funny before, I'd try and honk and the fact that nothing happened when I mashed the wheel hub made me holler with more emotion.

you can always get something like this, used on small boats (very load), and cheap:

I got an ah-ooogah horn I bought off some hipster a couple years ago for $20, mounted it on my motorhome, but it doesn't get much use there.
Maybe I ought to put it on Kodama, whadya think about a T4WD with one of them?

Funny my terc has only the high tone horn and the wife's FX only has the low tone horn.
Think I'll pull one of the old grille horns off my motorhome and combine them into our toyotas, though the high tone horn in the FX might be compressed from the damage to the core support.
