Wanted: governor coupler AT 4WD 86

Post by jpsanab »

Hi there guys, years ago I posted some pictures of an engine swap I made for my car, a 3AS engine into an 86' 4WD AT, some months ago, the governor coupling inside the front differential broke (not sure if that's the correct name for the part) thing is, I've been looking for it everywhere, locally (I'm from Costa Rica) and online, but I haven't found one yet.

I was wondering if any of you guys have the part or perhaps any idea where to get one, I've written to all the online site I've found with the part number and the response have been the same: discontinued...

Since I'm a little far from the States, it's not easy for me to go to a junkyard and get the part, to make things worse, the Toyota dealer here didn't import the AT version, so the few ones I've found in local junkyards here are all manual.

I would really appreciate if someone can share some light with me, I can pay using paypal and would need it to be sent to an address in Miami (my forwarder)

Thanks

i don't have a lead on this part for you but i think forum member mark replaced the same part on his automatic al25. he used parts from a 2wd trans, said they were the same. not sure if you can find a 2wd automatic second gen down there but it should widen your search a little bit.

good luck.

The governor is unavailable up here in Canada as well. When it was available from Toyota decades ago, the list price was close to $400. I got my replacement from an old "core" 2wd transmission that a transmission shop had lying around. I think I paid $75 for the whole trans. It was abit of a gamble since I didn't know if the governor in the core trans was defective as well until I opened it up at home. It ended up being fine and I'm still driving around with it.
The A55 governor coupling should be the same on all A55 and A55F transmissions (all 1st and 2nd gen automatic tercels: sedans, wagons, hatchbacks).

The transmission in my local yard would cost at least 100 dollars and I would need to pull it as well !

Just how desperate are you jpsanab?

Sound's like a lot of work for a part that could already be bad! If you are unable to come up with any other options I suppose you can pay me to buy it pull it and send you the part but i have very little time lately.

Too bad, I had an automatic I couldn't give away a few years ago.

it goes on the shaft between the diff and the trans proper, it is easy to get at: you just separate the diff/bell housing from the trans case and it is exposed. You would not need to buy the whole trans, just pull it and slit the diff/bell housing from the case and get it out, and only buy that part.

Will I need a puller to get it off the shaft?

What is a 3AS engine?
