tail pipe help (solved)

Post by smokerx »

I've never had a tailpipe or muffler and I need a muffler to pass inspection. I was hoping someone could help me determine whether

Walker part# 46691 is compatible with a 1983 Tercel 5 speed manual 4WD sold outside California before I order it and get the wrong part. I've got my cart loaded with # 18305 muffler and # 35594 pipe spout as well. I'm also wondering how many hangers and gaskets I'll need. I think just 4 #35352 insulators based on the diagram, but not sure if they're hangers or gaskets. Will I need to weld the muffler and tip into place?

Walker #46691 is not correct. You need #45851. See at bottom left: http://www.autozone.com/exhaust/exhaust ... l-2bl-sohc
I got Walker #18305 when I first replaced a muffler on Goldie and did not need the #35594 spout. See: http://www.autozone.com/exhaust/muffler ... geNumber=1
Unless the pricing is significantly different, I'd wait until I got the muffler to see if the current donuts will work, and then pick up the #35352 (and any clamps) at the local AutoZone/Advance, etc. See http://www.autozone.com/exhaust/exhaust ... l-2bl-sohc

The muffler should fit the pipe without welding, and the spout, if you get it, has screws to secure it to the muffler's pipe. Call Walker to confirm no welding - heck, to double-check me!

Cool, thanks for the help. I actually have the cat. and 2 feet of the intermediate tail pipe past the first bend.
Looking at the side by side comparison of tailpipes, it looks like the extra inches of pipe on the canadian version occur before the first bend. I'm guessing I can get away with angle grinding with a cut off blade on the Canadian, then bolting them together with an exhaust pipe coupler/joiner. The bolts on the old intermediate to cat. look like too much fun to pry loose. I'll take it loose from the exhaust manifold to de-rust and paint.

I thought you had a Federal car.

I have a Federal cat. The thread dlb linked is a Canadian who also has a US non Californian who shortened the pipe 8 inches. Just looking at the side by side comparison I'm certain enough this will work to have ordered the 46691 pipe from autozone, since I can mock it up and return it if it doesn't look possible.

I wire brushed everything for rust then mocked the new 46691 pipe up to find the optimal place to cut to have a straight section off the old pipe running front to back. I cut a kebab skewer to 1 1/2 inch matching the old pipes OD and slid it in passed the new pipes convertor bracket where the internal pipe starts to taper in. The old pipes 1 1/2 OD is a perfect fit with the 46691 ID. I then bastard filed and sanded the old pipe's 3 feet that would slide into the 46691 to remove rust and get a smooth surface. Cut the 46691 to where I had it marked from mocking it up, buttered the old pipe with old ATF for lube and slid 46691 on. definitely needed the lube but it slid on without a problem.

Here's where they meet. I could get a tailpipe patch to cove it up or maybe auto grade foil backed tape.
