Car Stalled and wont start.

Post by shambug »

My 85 tercel made a loud backfire like noise and then the engine died maybe 5 secs latter. I say backfire like because i have heard the car backfire and this was different, but still a loud bang. Also when i say the car died 5 sec latter, I immediately lost acceleration after the bang and it took about 5 secs for the engine to stall but i had no power during this time. When I turn the ignition I hear a high pitched clicking/cracking winning sound. I have been hearing a rattling noise for the past week coming from the front of the engine compartment. It sounded like a loose piece of metal vibrating, If I revved the engine the noise would stop around 2.500 rpm and then come back as rpms dropped. Also the clutch was slipping don't know if eather are related, I wont think that a clutch issue wouldnt stall the car but though i would mention it. I have it at the shop and they are going to take a look at in a few days.

funny, this just happened to someone else. sounds like the timing belt. pull the plastic cover on the front of the engine to check. luckily this is a non-interference engine so if it is the belt, just replace it and you should be good to go.

doesn't sound clutch-related to me.

also check the crank pulley for looseness
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

That's strange about the sound when you turn the ignition. Is the engine turning over when you try and start it? I've had a few timing belts fail on different cars and in all cases the engine suddenly dies and all the lights on the dash come on. If my engine died while driving, the first thing I'd suspect would be a broken timing belt. The only thing that makes me suspect a more catastrophic failure is all the rattling/banging/clicking noises.

usually if an engine bundles up it will either not turn, or have a big hole in the side of the block or oil pan. I have even seen an exhasut valve driven up through the top of the valve cover. the engine does not turn at all.

I have seen timing belts break and than wrap around other components and break them off, making all kinds of bad noises when it does. usually this does not happen, but it can, I bought one Tercel4wd that had the whole front of the oil pump broken off when the belt broke and wrapped around the idler pully and break it off the front of the oil pump. had to pull the engine half way to get the pan off to change the oil pump. a real PIA, I think it is a bad design that you have to pull the engine to change an oil pump, but that is typical on a lot of engines.

It was the timing belt.

so, when was the last time it was changed?

while you are replacing it you should also replace the front main oil seal, and the one on the front of the cam if it is stiff and brittle.

Yes replacing seals; they were leaking. I dont think the belt was ever changed and she's at 222,000.

The timing belt tensioner broke and damaged the oil pump. I started a new thread about that but put it in the wrong category. Heres that thread ( https://tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10735 ) basically I have the oil pan off the oil pump loose but i cant figure how to get the gear off the shaft. Also in trying to remove the gear i took a small chunk out see first picture and need to know if it needs replacing.

One of the tercels I've owned had a chipped timing gear like that, and it seemed to run fine!

Try soaking it in ATF if you haven't already.
