OH NO what did i do

Post by Gottolovem »

So this last weekend i was loading up my favorite t4 on my car dolly for a camping trip and i seem to have screwed up the tranny
Lone story short is that after loading and strapping down the front tires i reached in the window and pushed it out of gear without depressing the clutch. It is now stuck 5th i can engage 4wd and get EL but everything is bound up and the car just dies

I know the gearbox needs to come out but i don't know how to free up the tranny again after that.
I'm pretty sure that no parts have failed something is just stuck.

Is it possible that getting going down the road in 5th gear and hopping on and off the gas could free things up or is that wishful thinking

I had this happen to two other T4wd trans in exactly that way. I was rolling the car back and fourth in gear to get the timing mark lined up to install a replacement distributor and i pushed the shift lever into neutral, but it stayed in 2nd gear. I swapped out the trans, and later took the one stuck in 2nd gear appart. Never found a single thing wrong with it. I thought the shift fork may have popped out of place because of worn parts, but that was not the case. Perhaps it was the linkage that came loose, but we could not find the cause. I had the trans rebuilt with new parts anyway (even though all the internal parts looked good), and have not had any issues with it.

Almost certainly the trans has to come out, I would open the case and carefully inspect the linkage. One forum member found the bolt that holds the shift fork can come loose and fall out. could be your issue, which means it was not you shifting it out of gear not using the clutch, it was going to happen sooner or later anyway.

i popped one out of reverse without pressing the clutch
it would not shift into any gear
i took the tranny apart but did not find anything wrong
i did not put it back together
am using it for parts
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

this might work
before removeing tranny all the way
it would be worth trying

Wait who's hoarding trannies me or you? I fully intend to pass them along :)
Like I said earlier today over text, mine came out of 5th after I fiddled with the shift keys at the front of the gearbox, I just wonder how to do that without pulling the trans, My attempts were useless at the shifter.
I did this by accident with one of your donated trans on the bench just before I had mated it to the diff/bellhousing, I was dorkin around with that 5th/reverse cluster, I had stuck it in a gear and then absently mated it to the diff/bell, after my gasket in a tube hardened I noticed it was exhibiting the same symptoms as the old tranny and cracked it apart again and righted my fukcup.

Yea I was searching the forums for other instances of this happening to our little 4wd's.
Seems its just us, lol!

I have had the same experience, pulled it out of reverse while on a slight incline.
The only "fix" was to pull the trans off and realign everything, took a couple of tries but it all went back together fine.
Never did find anything wrong internally, just the forks got out of position.
Though I did have to do it a couple of times as on re-install I managed to bugger things up again.

This was 9 years ago and has been fine ever since, but I am careful not to do (similar) stupid things to it.

Speaking of stupid tranny abuses.
I have had issues with a sticky 3rd downshift for years, several flushes and many additives always helped for awhile but it reared its head again last winter.
Poor little car has been fulfilling DD duties since last October.
In February, some friends were headed out ice fishing and I decided to join them.

Instead of getting to the lake at 9:30 as planned it was closer to 11, given that I had to be off the ice by 2 to make it back to pick up boy at school I opted to drive out to meet them. After all they said there was only 6 inches of powder to deal with.
Turns out there as 8in of semi-hard pack underneath the powder.
As I was already committed, I found that by staying in the ATV tracks I could make headway in EL at 4500rpm.
Made it out fished and headed off to collect my son who, as it happens, wanted to go fishing too.
We went back out and met up the the boys again.

In total there was a good 2 hours of high revving abuse in EL and on the way home the 3rd downshift was as smooth as butter.
Not that I would recommend this as a "fix" but nearly 30K later 3rd gear is still a happy camper.

Jarf, what was you tire PSI?
I was told by all the rednecks in SLO (San louis Obispo, Ca) and east texas to have em down to 10 or below (but higher than 5) otherwise your hard inflated tires just dig in till they make purchase, after I dumped the pressure in my blazer while 4x4ing in a stony river bed in Atascadero I made perfect headway with almost 2/3 less RPM's.
Just my 2¢

Dredge - I do know that little trick but didn't do it, likely would have made a huge difference but I wasn't thinking at all that day.
In fact if I had been thinking at all, I would have left it on shore and walked out.
Just one of those days where everything went wrong and I lost my head.

Didn't have a compressor with me either way, so once I was off the ice I would have been in a world of hurt as there isn't a station around for miles.
Hopefully I'll never be dumb (or hurried) enough to repeat such silliness.

i usually bring a small light duty air compressor with us on road trips for just this kind of stuff. i think i've only ever needed to use it on our bikes but you know that if i didn't bring it, we would suddenly need it for something serious. i have one like this, only cost $15 or something like that.

My buddy had a toyota hylux/chinook MHCR truck and under the hood he had a remote controlled air shock compressor that ran of the 12v system, alwase wanted to get ahold of one.
