Feeler: 1987 Tercel SR5 4WD

Post by Jiro »

I have a rare 1987 Toyota Tercel SR5 4WD 6spd that I am either going to sell as is or fix it and sell it in a few months. It just started to blow blue smoke on acceleration so I pulled all the plugs and cyl 1&2 are pretty oily. I love this car and should not sell it, but I am in the middle of another project. I'm mainly wondering what someone here would pay for it as is or once it's fixed. Like I said it's super rare being the last year (1987) SR5, two tone color, composite headlamps, power steering, power sunroof, 6 speed, factory roof rack, A/C (doesn't blow cold though). 209K miles

New within the last 10K miles
Air filter
Water pump
Drive belts
Timing belt
Cam seal
Crank seal
Valve cover gasket
Plug wires
Alternator
Front brake calipers
Front brake rotors
Front brake pads
Rear brake shoes
Rear wheel cylinders
Front LH axle

1988 was the last year!

I'd say $1,000 with a dead engine, $2,000 or more with a fixed engine? Depends on location.

you need to give more details on rust, dents, condition of interior, etc to give us an idea of how much it would fetch. i can see in the first pic that the rub strips are missing from the driver side doors and rear quarter panel but can't tell if there are spots of rust there as well.

mint condition, rust free and in excellent working order can fetch as high as $3500-4000 with the right buyer.

I just snagged a 1984 SR5 with 199k EVERYTHING WORKS excluding drivers door window regulator for 500 bucks. "It needs paint"
Diffrent markets fetch diffrent prices yours appears to have great paint though.
I would never pay more than 500 for a car that needs an engine but that is in my area.
PNW fetches higer prices.

Make sure the problem isn't a plugged PCV valve first. Unfortunately an oil burner is hard to sell, but a non oil burner, even with the same miles will bring a good price if the body and interior are in very good shape.

No dents, no rust, no wear through or tears in the seats or carpet, dash in good shape, you may be lucky to get $800 to 1k for it, with a reman engine, you could get $3-4K, but the reman engine might cost you that much by itself if you have it done at a shop. I think you can get a reman for around $1600 and put it in yourself in just a day if you have the right equipment.

Or rebuild it yourself.

Thanks for the info guys. I will probably fix it before I sell it, this car is so awesome it deserves it. I am in the middle of putting a Lexus V8 in my Toyota Pickup, so I don't have the time or money right now but once the truck is done I'll get her fixed up. I might even look into doing the 4ac engine. Somehow I don't have that many pictures but I'll get some more soon. Rub strips were off in the picture because they were falling off. I cleaned them up re-installed them with new 3M tape. Paint and interior are very good for the age/miles, just door dings and one small dent on the passenger front door. I have not found any rust anywhere.

Jiro
Where are you located?
Mine is suffering from terminal cancer and I really don't want a Forrester.
What is "a little blue smoke"?

Thanks

I am just east of Seattle. Blue smoke keeps other drivers staying 100+ feet behind me while driving :)

try adding seafoam to the oil, following the directions on the can. it has done wonders for myself and several other forum members who had really carbon'd up oil scraper rings that caused excessive oil consumption.

What's funny is my wagon that burned a quart per 100 miles had zero blue smoke...

When I have tailgaters - I hit the rear washer and let the fluid drip down the hatch window. Loved to do this in the '83 30 years ago, esp. if the 'gater was a BMW or an MB.
Always wanted to find yellow washer fluid, though...
