tercel for rescue

Post by InTheForest »

84' Tercel SR5 wagon for sale in Victoria BC. Picked it up two years ago down in the states with the intention to slowly make it nice and bit off more than I could chew. Live in Victoria and have been commuting 3-4 days per week out to Sidney. Has 279126 miles or 449k Revs high. The carb I've been told. Head gasket has weeped since I got the car and it leaks oil. But I put a couple grand into it in the beginning to make it comply with BC standards so there are pluses. The other day it started making some pretty rough noise and lost some of the power to the wheels. So now its time. We have applied to the scrap it program because they'll give us nearly a years worth of bus passes (= approx $850.00) But I thought we should check to see if one of you might want a little project. The body is fairly good condition The inside is a little rough. These pictures are from when I got the car but not much would be any different now. It would be hard to take much less than the scrap it program but I wanted to make sure you don't loose a good project or parts car so asking $800 but make an offer if its reasonable.

PM for details

Charles

P.S. Time is of the essence. If this is not wrapped up by the end of this week I'll be forced to scrap it so please be promt. Thank you for your time.

I would be interested but I am already over my vehicle limit, and there's not enough time to get rid of one.

I know that car, it has a sun roof too. Came from New Mexico. Worth saving, the engine should be solid so the power loss could be carb/tune-up related. Unless it was over heated the head gasket should still be good, perhpas the leak is from the valve cover gasket? (head gaskets do not leak oil). Front seals and timing belt were new 3 years ago.

the head gasket is actually weeping coolant down the outside of the block. IIRC it's on the driver side, just below the spark plugs. charles told me this a while back and i finally got to see it recently to confirm that this is in fact the case. very odd.

the body looks in exelent shape ,no rust,83 are my favorites with sunroof,alloy,inclinometers,3.73 trans gear,what else do you want?is like a full option Land Cruiser today,goes everywhere and doesnt cost 62K like a house.only 800 box obo.i dont know the procedure to dmw ,brink it back in the states,anybody outhere knows?i was looking one time to purchase a Toyota Prado,Turbo Diesel from Canada ,but i dont know the procedure.DLB you live there so you probably know?well i am a Toyota guy so anything from 80's with wheels and Toyota name i love it.i own also a fj 60 Land Cruiser ,i can compare it with a german panzer Tank,the way they built it,i wish had a fj 40 land cruiser stock no modification,but i cant afford it this time or a Toyota Prado turbo diesel.well have a good day my tr4 s family,be back sometimes today.

he might try just retorquing the head bolts to 43 ft-lb. I found this on my car recently, not supposed to need it but I was losing coolant on a six month old rebuild, and all coolant lose stopped after I just retorqued it in sequence, it only took about 10 min total time.

I do not think getting it registered back in the states would be a problem since it was originally a car from the USA, you might need some paperwork for the border crossing. to go from the US to Canada you have to fax or email the title and bill of sale 24 hours before to the place you are crossing so they can check it is not stolen, when you get there they just check the VIN on the car and give you a transit pass. Likely something similar going the other way.

here is one of the threads that feature this car, I named it Hermes for the wings it once sported on the sides;

Rescue mission has started. I am the crazy person who volunteered to keep this car from being crushed. I am very excited to get this one home and complete my rust free fleet!
