I assume you have the regular 1/2" drive ratchet, but they have a pricey one that has a lot more internal teeth and if you thought the regular one was smooth, this one ratchets like a dream!!

It was $23 but with a coupon and surprise points I got it for $11 :D

Small update, got the crankshaft pulley off, tried a pipe wrench on the crankshaft, still stuck. Tried drilling a hole in #4 piston, it is stuck now too.

Oil pan time?

pulling the engine and trans together might be helpful for better access, but consider that you still have to separate the two and figure out a way to get the crank to turn. It might not be so easy to get the bolts off with the engine and trany out of the car since there is no engine stand that will hold both. if out of the car it might be easier to cut the pan off and get access to the mangled connecting rod that seems to be the thing preventing it from turning.

It seems to be you would want to find a way to grab the #4 piston and pull it up from the top. perhaps several holes and you can loop a cable or large hook around the wrist pin? and put a come-along or something similar on it and force it up. You may have to cut it up from above and pull it out small peice by peice. Of course you can do that with the whole engine too, but I would hate to think about how much work that would be. Carve away the engine from the transmission? way too much effort to contemplate. find out what is stopping the crank from turning (likely the broken #4 connecting rod), cut it up and remove it, and than you should be able to unbolt the flex plate from the torque converted to separate the trans.

In many cars the torque converter can stay attached to the back of the engine and you can slide the trans off it. Not sure if this is the case with the Tercel auto trans. You might have to pull both engine and trans together to be able to do that.

This has been stalled out by the weather and other things coming up, but I'm going to remove the starter next and see if I can see into the hole in the side better.

Victory  (okay, a small one)

Dad lent me a massive pipe wrench. Using this on the crankshaft (where the pulley and timing sprocket would go) from under the car I was able to make the engine turn backwards a full revolution until it got stuck again. In the meantime the rest of the torque converter bolts came off.

Now I'm trying to figure out which bolts I'm missing that attach the engine to the car. I got both stiffeners, the shock absorber, both engine mounts, the upper transmission bolts, and I think I got all the lower ones. I can't find one of the lower bolts on the passenger side that the manual refers to. The engine seems stuck on still, but maybe I need to get my hoist out.

did you find the 10mm bolt that is on passenger side and goes in from engine side to bell housing (water pipe)
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

When i pulled a 3ac there was a bolt holding a shield near the starter(down low).
I wiggled it all around the engine was loose and kinda flopping around but would not come off until i found it.

Engine is out

I did not realize I need a seal where the torque converter meets the transmission, will need to find that now...

yup, typical ran without oil situation, the #4 connecting rod goes first. looks like it took out the oil pan too. Most of that engine is now scrap metal, you might salvage the connect ting rods from the other three cylinders. even the head is suspect since the piston likely slammed into it.

The head looked okay, I'll take pictures of it later.

the head can usually be reused if you resurface it, and have it crack checked. Install new exhaust valves and have the intakes reground (and verifiy none are bent), with new seals. You will have a new head ready to go for the next project.

Took the engine all the way apart, all the pistons were nasty! The blown rod was interesting, will take pictures tomorrow.

There's also a yellow sticker on the top of the valve cover like in the 84 I got from Peter/Carlos, I wonder if it was a crate engine to begin with and maybe the little old lady nuked another engine prior to this one...

Got the input shaft seal off, took some doing, it was in there tight!

Any advice for draining the torque converter? I think I managed to get half a quart out of it (it takes 1.1 quarts). Does the fluid inside the torque converter cycle with the rest of the ATF? If so I won't worry so much about draining it all the way.

Now waiting on that input shaft seal to continue on!

yes, the fluid in the torque converter cycles through the rest of the trans. Just be careful to keep the dirt out of it.
