can you look in your FSM for me?

Post by xirdneh »

I have a 1983 FSM but I question the picture on TA-27
It shows Shift Fork #4 being removed along with the Slider the Fork is connected to.
There is a bevel on one side of the Slider and my picture shows the bevel on rear side (aft)
I have taken apart lots of Tercel trannys and have seen it installed forward and aft so i wonder which way is correct and because of this I have to ask the question because "I just have to know".

if you have different year FSM could you look and see how it is shown?

it may not make any difference how it is installed, since the slot in the Slider for the Fork is centered
but looking inside the slider at the grooves, shows there is a difference there (a notch in the protrusions on end opposite bevel)

Note: the rearmost tranny Slider is for the connection to rear driveline and it has to be installed bevel forward since the slot for the Fork is not centered and the picture in FSM shows that.
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

what about the 1985 FSM on the forum here? on MT-23 and -24 it mentions removing the shift fork shaft and then the shift head. on mt-58 and -59 it covers reinstallation but it doesn't mention or seem to show any slider.

the FSM usually shows a picture of removal where there is a glimpse of the slider
page TA-53 (install picture) shows it being installed the opposite way of page TA-27 (removal picture)
i looked at a Mitchell Manual at the library today and it had very little in the way of pictures and details but the detailed drawings it did have focused on those sliders
so if i go with that book the large bevel faces Forward on 5th, Extra Low and 4wd sliders
1st/2nd slider has a small bevel and it installs facing Aft
3rd/4th slide has a small bevel and it installs facing Aft also (the slider has reverse gear cut on top on forward side)
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

the only diagram that i can see a bevel in is at the bottom of MT-58. it mentions tapping a snap ring on the shift fork shaft. in that pic, there is a bevel towards the other end of the shaft, but it's not clear which way that bevel is supposed to face. sorry, rob.
