85 SR5 Winnsboro $1000, now $700

This forum is for cars that run, or at least are close to running. This isn't for parting out complete cars.

Welcome to the forum toyo4x4

You should do a little fiddling With your tranny before you buy another!
Pull out your shifter see if something is stuck Get under it look at the 4wd lever linkage
Roll it back and forth while popping clutch
If it's drivable Get it going in 3rd gear and go on and off the gas while trying to pull it out of 3rd.
Try to give the people here on the forum some more information Perhaps there is an answer to your stuck tranny?

I have already done all that and it's still stuck but, thank you just the same . Now the car has 136,000. The car has no rust and is solid. I see that most of you are far from SC. Therefore, I would be willing to let it go for $500 but not a penny less. Maybe the easiest way is to fly here and rent a uhaul truck to take home.

I've looked into long distance uhaul trucks before and they are expensive, unfortunately.

A quick run from "Greenville SC" to Farmington NM is $1,500 for the truck + tow trailer, $600 in gas, 26+ hours of driving, and that doesn't count food and lodging, or the airfare to get there!

You'd probably be better off getting a commercial car shipper to do it.

Someone needs to buy it disconnect the rear drive line and use a car dolly!
If I was closer it would already be mine

Come to think of it the drive line can stay on with a dolly

That price is with a flat trailer, deduct $200 for a dolly. Still expensive!

the best way to move that car cross country would be bring tools and a known good trans, do the trans swap at the sellers place, and than drive it back. It would take the sellers cooperation to allow you to camp out with the car and do the work to swap it out, preferably out of the weather. If local transpiration to the autoparts store or from the airport can be provided by the seller that would save the buyer from having to get a rental car or use a taxi until the Tercel is drivable.

I have had to do this kind of repair "in the field", and not that many tools are necessary and can be easily packed as luggage, but having a place to work out of the weather would be very much useful in getting the car back on the road that much faster.

these are things that makes purchasing this car viable for the buyer, and can be provided at little cost to the seller if the car can be worked on at the present location of the car.

I'm in Athens, ga and I saw this on Craigslist. I want so bad to get another one of these like I had a couple years back. If I could get rid of my current ride I'd get it in a heartbeat

Good for you! welcome to the forum 4wdriver!

There are lots of good info on this forum about pulling and fixing transmissions. It would be interesting to know more about this car, and what is wrong with the trans that might benefit other Tercel owners. Post some pictures if you can too!

have you owned Tercel4wd wagons before? Or are they new to you? where are you located?

I have never owned a Tercel wagon before. To be completely honest, up until about 2 weeks ago I had no idea they existed. I am a huge fan of anything 4WD/4x4, or AWD. (I like almost anything Subaru.) I absolutely love wagons, so when I heard about this car I got super excited.

I live in Greenville, SC.

I plan on finding a transmission and swapping it in. (If I can find one, cause these transmissions are super rare.) Then repairing the broken one, so that I can have a good backup transmission.

btw, the thread on transmission removal on here was very useful. I have the FSM, but the thread was way more detailed.

Sounds like it's time to start your own thread on your new car. And as previously stated there is a lot of information to draw from in this forum. We will try to help you work through it all.

Update: I found someone that is parting out an 83 and 85 wagon in Tennessee. The transmission in the 85 has no 5th gear. He says that the transmission in his 83 is good, but will that transmission work? ( I was thinking that the only difference was the front dif.)

Also what would be a good price to pay for the transmission. Cause I will have to drive 4-5 hours up there, pull out the transmission, then drive back to Greenville.

You will need the rear pumpkin from that 83 to match the front diff of that trans. The gearing is not compatible with your car.
