ticking noise from tranny
Ive got a 1987 tercel 4wd wagon, with the six speed tranny. Recently my car has a ticking almost popping sound coming from the tranny. It makes this sound when the car is started and just sitting, then stops when you engage the clutch. Then starts again when you get moving. At first thought maybe throw out bearing( had rough bearing noise prior to this) so swapped that and put new clutch in. But still no avail. Now i think the bearings shot again. Possible output shaft problems? I dont know. I have a pretty good idea the tranny needs replaced, but hoping not. any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Tony

welcome to the forum, tony.
it sounds like you're saying that the ticking occurs when the car is not moving, clutch disengaged (pedal pushed down). it then stops when you engage the clutch (pedal up). i agree that that sounds like a throw out bearing. but then you say it starts again when the car starts moving, which would not be the throw out bearing.
did the symptoms change at all after doing the clutch and t/o bearing?

Re: ticking noise from tranny
Im sorry,
Hard to explain. When the car is first started and is sitting in nuetral, you can hear the sound. Then when you press the clutch, to put into gear. The sound goes away. But as soon as the clutch is out and the car is going, the sound returns. So yes I replaced the throw out, and the problems still there. I also think my bearing is bad again. Maybe bad output shaft? I have had my tercel for 5 years and love it. Which will never leave the stable. Hope that helps. Thanks for the welcome.

Re: ticking noise from tranny
Welcome to the site! Has the tranny been run low on oil lately? Sounds like the input shaft bearing to me. A bad t/o bearing would only make noise when the clutch pedal is depressed and the output shaft brng would only make noise when the car is moving. Good luck- where are you located?
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

Re: ticking noise from tranny
no worries, your second description covers it pretty well. i agree with rer233 that it sounds like the input shaft bearing, aka ISB. this has been covered a few times lately so here is one of those threads.

Yeah this one has me stumped. Still learnin. Tranny fluids have been good. What would cause this when the car sitting idling in nuetral. Is there a way of checking if its the input bearing, without tearing down. hoping can be repaired, without swap. Thanks for the help. Btw im in Brush Prairie, Washington

Re: ticking noise from tranny
the symptoms you describe are the best way to diagnose an ISB. only way to confirm it is to get the trans out and spin the bearing while feeling for roughness.
in that thread i linked to, xirdneh mentions that there are actually two ISB's on this trans: one bigger sealed external one that is easy to swap without tearing the trans apart, and one smaller internal one that requires tearing it apart. i think the best thing to do is get the trans out, remove the input shaft, and spin each bearing independently. not sure if you can reach the inner one from outside the trans but hopefully. even if you can't though, i would be confident that if the outer one is spins smoothly, the inner one probably needs to be replaced.
you can continue driving with a worn ISB for quite a while so you have some time before you will need to do this.

Thanks for the responses guys. looks like ill be tearing it down again. Oh well, bearings ands seals are cheaper than new tranny. Hopefully this will take care of it

Re: ticking noise from tranny
welcome to the forum.
Before you completely remove the trans you might try just removing the input shaft. this can be done by lowering the rear of the trans and removing the 8 or 9 bolts that hold the metal cover on the back of the input shaft. from there you usually can wiggle out the input shaft and one of the two bearings comes with it. If the larger baring on the shaft is bad (you can tell by the feel), it can be replaced and than the input shaft installed back into the bell housing.
Also, did you change the pilot bearing in the back of the crank shaft when you replaced the clutch? this bearing usually squeals when they go bad, but if it was not replaced it could be the source of the noise.
If you do not hear the ticking on acceleration, it does not seem likely it is coming from the trans. any bad bearings or gears in trans usually will get much worse when loaded during acceleration.
You also might try one of those mechanic's stethoscope to narrow down the source of the noise. It is best to diagnose the problem first, before you try and fix it. Or you waste time and money fixing things that are not broken.
good luck

Re: ticking noise from tranny
I have the same exact symptoms in a car i'm selling later this month.
First i plan to try just input shaft if i find no problems i will dig a little deeper to find the source.
I will post what i find this weekend.

Thanks Petros,
Im Going to try that first, see if that does it. If not well be tearing her down again. Pilot bearing did get replaced. Theres also that same noise under acceleration. Which sounds like bad bearing not crunching gears, hopefully. After not gettin it the first time. I had figured I was going to have to replace things. Thank goodness for Tercel4wd.com. Also Gottoloven let me know how things turn out this weekend

Re: ticking noise from tranny
All right finally got to get the tercel on the rack. And all of you right the inner input shaft bearing was toast. What a great diagnosis, from just posting some sounds. Big thanks to all that chimed in. Now my problem is locating a replacement bearing. Been searching high and low, even the dealer. With no avail.
If anyone has any suggestions, would be much appreciated. Im off to see if i can cross reference it with anything

Re: ticking noise from tranny
Advanced auto parts on-line lists the trans rebuild kit that includes this bearing. It is a pit pricey, even for a whole kit with the syncros, cost me $541 includes shipping. I ordered one and the shipper says it was shipped. when it arrives I will see if the input shaft bearing has a part number, perhaps we can find a supplier of just the bearing itself.

Re: ticking noise from tranny
wow i cant believe i am having this kind of trouble finding one bearing. this is all i need to get the tercel back on the road. toyota doesnt make it anymore and nobody around here has anything similar. really stumped.
hey petros i saw your kit online, just not sure if it includes this bearing. Do you know if the cheaper kit without syncros has that bearing? if so why not by itself
