No start? (scratches his head)

Post by scouttster »

Would bad solenoid contacts on the starter keep me from having spark? Had been having the click and no start for a few months with her eventually starting for me. Now, she won't start and run for me and I pulled the #2 and I have no spark. I'm getting fuel, just no spark. Where to start, pull the dizzy or what? Thx in advance...

Starter is separate from ignition. Sounds like you have two separate problems.

i think your battery is dead. when you turn the key to start the car, the starter draws a lot of power from the battery. as healthy battery should only dip down to, i don't know, say 11 V under the starter's load, but as batteries age they cannot hold enough charge under that load to crank the engine or, if it's really bad, even produce spark. so i say get the battery load tested at any auto parts place for free and go from there.

I assumed it was cranking normally when it finally did turn over. Is it turning over really slowly?

make sure your cam shaft is turning when you crank it. a broken timing belt will still allow it to crank, but without turning the distributor you get no spark. if the timing belt is okay, and you are sure you have no spark, and your battery is good, than you may have to replace the distributor with a junk yard distributor, or take it apart and check each component per the service manual procedure with a volt-olm meter.

good luck.
