thermostat with that air bleed thing on it?

Post by xirdneh »

i recently installed a thermostat with what I assume is some kind of air bleed (small hole with wiggly brass plug)
i installed thermo so air bleed was on TOP
that did not work out so well
the air bleed thing tilted down and got wedged in causing the thermo to be stuck open
did i install this wrong?
what exactly is that thing for?
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

it is supposed to assist when filling the engine and rad from empty so the air will pass out of the hoses and engine. but I have used both types and find that it makes no difference, the air comes out easy enough without it. Remove the wiggler valve if it gives you trouble, it seems putting in the up position is the correct thing to do, but if it gets in the way, remove it. It should not be long enough to get caught under the valve plate.

My current t-stat is a gen-u-wine Toy product. It does not have the jiggle valve. When I asked the local Toy dealer about it (the only thing I've not gotten from Butler!), the parts guy showed me the spec on it and Toy said it was the correct replacement for our cars.

looks like a bad design. I would send this picture to the manufacture to let them know their t-stat sucks, and to fix it. than I would cut out the jiggler and consider using it without it.
