More Cali

Post by Bushman »

Hey All

Just saw these two pop up in my area:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/cto/3823847951.html

And

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/3811844027.html

Both seem pretty nice, but a tad pricey. You would all know better than I.

The first one with the bad tranny is way overpriced, despite the good body. If it is going to need a trans than $2k is way too much, might be worth half that. the seller goes into a lot of detail about all the great maintenance he gave it, as if that makes up for buying a non-drivable car, and makes no mention of changing the gear oil in the trans for 210k miles. Replacing the trans could cost $800-$2000 if you go to a shop (that is if they can find a good used one to install).

The other one is better deal, but the body is a bit rough for that price. Might be worth it.

The '83 with the bad trans is being sold by member eightythree4dubdee. He got the car at 185,000 miles. It might still be possible to get a used JDM import transmission for it somewhere instead of trying to fix the current one. Even with a missing 5th gear, it should be able to cruise at 60 mph on the highway without straining the engine too much.

the fifth gear is actually a easy fix without pulling the trans apart. when you separate the front diff/bellhousing the fifth gear is exposed. You have to use a puller after you remove some clips, but everything is exposed on the front of the main gear housing. And the 4wd 5th gear parts are the same as the 2wd fifth gear parts, so they should be available. You still have to pull the trans, might put in a new clutch while you are at it.
