old pics & vids of tercs and burning man

Post by dlb »

i found my crappy old digital camera and just put all its contents on my photobucket. there are some really cool pics and vids of my and my wife's first trip down to burning man, as well as a few pics of oldskool's pimp yellow terc, which was the flashpoint for my t4 love affair. thought i'd share it here with yall.

fyi, we're doing burning man again this year. i encourage any and all of you to give it a shot.

oldskool's bad ass terc.

another.

at a truck stop in WA, first day of the trip heading south to BM. i can't believe how clean ron was. i should never have painted him. note how the back end is weighed down and sagging!

Image

ron's hind end! i REALLY wish i never painted it.

Image

the bridge ronette polanski walked across in the twin peaks pilot! this is in snoqualmie. saw kids doing flips off the top of the bridge. it was like 100 ft or something crazy.

funny poster in a tiny, sad, dying little town in WA called pe ell.

a giant, multiplayer rubick's cube at BM.

blurry chicken and seahorse art cars.

Image

burning man by day—the steam punk house/train/art car on the left was amazing.

Image

i'm not sure what this thing was but it was also amazing. lots of fire.

Image

this art piece was very haunting when found in the middle of the night in a sand storm.

Image

a huuuuuge slide! extremely dangerous, but lots of fun. i was terrified when i did it.

Image

a vid of a cool fire art piece.

Image

a vid of the thunderdome. anyone can fight anyone in it, and it's awesome.

Image

a cool little art piece we walked past on our way to bed one night.

bone tree.

the man burning.

I have always wanted to got to Burning Man but have yet to make it. I only live 4 hours away so definitely close by. Having a new baby in the family makes events like that a little hard to go to though.

Do you drive through Southern Idaho on your way to the festival DLB? If so and I am still in Twin Falls at the time PM me and we can at least meet up.

My family is definitely the hippie/artsy/natural remedy type of family so give us a heads up. Would love to meet you guys.

wow, a 4 hour journey to bm would make it a dream! if we have multiple drivers and take turns so we don't stop, we can make it in about 24 hrs, but my wife and i like to make the best of it and spend about 10 days getting there and 3 or 4 on the way back. when your progeny is a little bit older you should bring them to bm. lots of people bring their kids there, you just have to be really aware of the heat and sun since it affects kids so much faster.

on our first trip, we primarily went down the coast into northern CA in the mt. shasta area, then headed east to bm. last time we took a slightly inland route through the hotter and more arid regions of WA and OR and it was great, but just a bit too hot for me...and our vw. we haven't planned our route yet but we have talked about doing the coast again and maybe going south far enough to see the redwood forests but i'll let you know if we do decide to hit idaho, turtcel.

Sounds like you guys go on some pretty awesome road trips together. Will definitely have to take the nugget to the BM fest one day. I would really like to go.

I said if I am still in S. Idaho because it is looking like we will be moving to Ashalnd, Oregon in March which is 12 mies North of Cali on the 5. If you do not take the 101 like I would imagine you would and you roll the 5 give me a PM it would really be great to meet you guys. I could even roll over to the 101 which is about 2 1/2 hours west...not bad at all.

BM is in August correct? My job goes from March thru mid November and gets really busy during Oct and Nov. August or before would be almost the perfect time for me to slip away for a day or two.

You taking the Terc again or will the VW be breaking down along the way to the festivities? Haha, I know we can relate to that being that we both had or have our VW's still. Damn, I miss my Westy but not her problems...the POS. $13,500 in a year an half into her and sold it for $6500. Guess that is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Sorry, kinda tangented there for a second.

Just read over my post and had to laugh a little..Haha, BM (not necessarily Burning Man).

yeah, we love road trips. way more fun than flying places. you get to really dig in to the little towns and cultures along the way.

yup, this year bm is from aug 26-sept 2. you'd still be really close to it, even in ashland.

this year we will be taking our new massive f-350 and slide-in camper. we took my '87 t4 the first year, then the westfalia last time. it will be nice to have power to spare for all the mountain passes this year, and the camper is actually pretty big. i actually don't even have a terc of my own anymore! if i find the right one, i might switch back from the corolla all trac but we'll see.

I love the bone tree. Ifit's the same one in thinking. It started out as an arch in the 90s (I first went in 99 and saw it then) and boy has it grown! There's just something about it. Haunting, simple but very powerful.

I think BM has gotten to big...at least for my tastes. I'm always on the look out for new festival style start ups that aren't well known. I know a couple of them and will share them with you D if you're interested. One is in canada and the other is here in the upper Midwest.

always interested in new and funky stuff, ehf. throw them at me.

i agree that bm has gotten HUGE (60,000 tickets available this year!) and am not sure how i feel about that but we'll see in august. however, in stark contrast, it seems that all the smaller regional burns have really taken off. lots of them popping up and reportedly being very cool. my wife and various friends have gone to a few in BC and AB and have really dug them. you might consider checking some of those out, ehf.

We actually started our own festival here in Idaho. We named it the Melon's Ball. Meaning it's for all heads. We find a remote location, usually with hot springs and head out for a few days. Small group of about 15 friends with music and pyscodelic lighting through the night in the woods.

We actually bring in generators, lights, stereos, costumes, and other party supplies and just allow ourselves to be human. Tons of fun and nice that it isn't 60,000 strong.

Just had our 3rd annual and it was a blast. Maybe we would be open to some new friends at the ball next year? We put it on in Sept or Oct depending on how we feel.

Just nice to let the inner animal out once in a while. Society has brainwashed us into forgetting we are animaistic and this is just our way of bringing it back.
