My tercel:: 87 tercel 4x4 wagon w/reringed engine, 83 tercel 4x4 wagon w/salvaged engine and 4.1 Diff's

Alternator Regulator ????

I was checking out my friends '83 Tercel today
he was having some alternator related issues
the alternator looked just like the one in my '83 but his had an external regulator and mine has internal
i asked where he got the alternator
he took it from another Tercel
i asked if it had the internal regulator
he did not know
so my ? is what happens when you install an internal regulator alternator in a car that has an external regulator?
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

the connectors are not the same, you would have to cut and splice a different connector on the wire harness. You probably can run an internal reg alternator on a car with an external one, but not the other way around. It would just have two regulators in the system.

I agree with Petros, the connectors would be different. I would match the alternators with what was there before.

Its worse than that, the external alternator is 50 amp and the internal is 55, as I remember your 4wds take the 55 amp., according to my manual.
