Tunes for the Road

Post by North of 64 »

What song or album or podcast or audiobook wouldn't you be without on a roadtrip, especially a roadtrip in your Tercel?

For example: I don't do a road trip of less than 500km without listening to Neil Young - Live at Massey Hall 1971

I'm looking to freshen up my tired ipod with suggestions from this very eclectic Tercel4wd.com group.

Thanks

Leonard Cohen's new one 'Old Ideas' is an excellent mellow mood listen
CCR Chronicle Vol. 1 Greatest Hits for a sunny, nostalgic kind of day. (Makes me think of the Midnight Sun Hotel every time it comes up on random)
Toots and the Maytals - True Love
Willie Nelson - Countryman (If you don't know it, it's not what you think!)
Feist - Metals (not slow like the others)
The Devils Rejects Soundtrack with all the talking crap removed.
Old Crow Medicine Show - Self titled
Frank Black - Fast Man Raider Man
Johnny Cash - Love
Ray Charles - The Genius Sings the Blues
Steve Earle - Trancendental Blues (or anything other than that Copperhead crap)

I like variety, and random play all; keeps me on my toes~!

Harry Chapin - any tape.
Janis Joplin - any tape.
Creedence - any tape.
The rest would be assorted classical pieces, but mainly Eastern European composers.

Yes - I typed "tapes;" that is what Goldie has for audio and I cannot abide earphones.

Creedence tapes you say? hope you don't pound on Goldies roof so hard as your being tailed down the street by an evil looking VW (and maybe a Tercel at :12)?

Great soundtrack on this film btw.. so we are not getting off topic..

Hot Tuna and King Crimson are absolute must haves.
Maybe a little Focus, too.

jarf, i'm fairly psyched to hear king crimson mentioned here. i'm not familiar with all of their stuff but what i know, i like. as for focus, i only know their hit, hocus pocus.

just remembered: the entire police discography.

def not one of the police's greatest moments but i can tolerate it and at least dig the odd time signature. of all their catalogue, tea in the sahara is the only track i actually dislike. ghost in the machine is totally my fave, super dark and somehow futuristic a la blade runner but it still retains the fun, bouncy white reggae. weird but awesome. stewart copeland is my fave musician of all time, hands down.

DLB - you are about the 3rd person I have ever "met" that even admits to knowing any of that stuff (outside of my own circle of friends that is).
Having a musical background, I have a huge respect for bands that create music that is technically challenging with lyrics that also have a message.

You really need to check out '3 of a perfect pair' and 'Discipline', my 2 most favourite Crimson albums of all time, while all their stuff is good, those 2 are truly outstanding.

As for Focus, Yorma's vocal range is outstanding, hocus pocus is great but there is soooo much more in their repertoire, it is truly incredible that more people are not familiar with them. While the albums are getting hard to find, there is lots available on youtube.

after you mentioned them, i started reading about them on wikipedia. it sounded like they were really plagued with internal problems and weren't able to deliver consistently strong albums. i'm always dubious of professional critics and what they hail as a good or bad album though. do you have any album suggestions for focus?

i know my buddy who was right into king crimson liked 3 of a perfect pair a lot. i'll check it and discipline out. i remember having a hard time accepting greg lake as the singer on the first album. he's a fine singer but some of his lyrics are horrible and now i can't disassociate his voice from those lyrics. i always preferred ELP's instrumental sections. their first album is crushing, soooo heavy. great artwork too.
