Wondering what kinds of detailed topo and backroad maps members are using....those who actually look at maps that is.

I've used the program below and it works....though it's been a long time since I've used it.

"USAPhotoMaps downloads U.S.Geological Survey aerial photos / topos from <a href='http://terraserver-usa.com/' target='_blank'>http://terraserver-usa.com/</a> (available at no charge, courtesy of Microsoft) and creates a map from them."

An example of a map.....

Can be shown in topo form also....

I use the standard USGS topo maps. I have the entire area of middle TN where I live up on the wall here in my basement. Also use a book called the Tennessee Gazateer, which has basic topo maps of the entire state......it's esp. useful for my bicycling trips, 'cause it shows every little insignificant backroad.
1984 Tercel 4wd Dlx. - 192K miles.
1985 Tercel 4wd SR5 - 185K miles (not running)
1986 Tercel 4wd Dlx - 210K miles (dd)

Only 3 to go for the whole set ! lol

I use the Washington gazateer, Topo!, National Forest maps, and any other map I can get my hand on. The gazateer is my favorite for finding most places, but I like the National Forest maps for finding lakes, roads, and rockhunting spots.

Here are some neat 3D maps....

<a href='http://www.holoscenes.com/index_holoscenes.html' target='_blank'>http://www.holoscenes.com/index_holoscenes.html</a>

Black Hills...

<a href='http://www.holoscenes.com/cgi-bin/img.c ... _hills.jpg' target='_blank'>http://www.holoscenes.com/cgi-bin/img.c ... lls.jpg</a>

Camped in the Hills quite a while ago....good camping....not so much up and down?

Death Valley...

<a href='http://www.holoscenes.com/cgi-bin/img.c ... valley.jpg' target='_blank'>http://www.holoscenes.com/cgi-bin/img.c ... ley.jpg</a>

I never made it over the mountains to Death Valley...but camped a lot in the Owens Valley and the Panamint Valley just to the east of Death Valley.
