How much power can the Z54F take? Is the Z54F the weakest link in the drivetrain of the tercel 4wd (assuming a larger flywheel and clutch)? Or would the front drive axles be the weakest link?
(I'm just dreaming about future heavy engine modifications )
I wouldn't trust it with much over 100hp with stock gears. I'm working on developing a low cost solution to upgrading the clutch hubs and synchros and that would improve strength. I believe the weak part of the tranny is the clutch hub and locking collar which is built into the gears. I would most likely upgrade the gears as well. Toyota used small synchros and clutch hubs and locking collars becuase the gears and locking collars are one piece, made from the same stock to save manufacturing cost. I would make locking collar and hub units that are bigger and buy standard gears and machine them to press-fit onto the hubs. I'm interested in sourcing high performance clutch hubs and synchros and adapting them to the z54f as that might be cheaper. The gears on the countershaft are cut into the shaft itself, so that's probably a source of weakness. I would make a new shaft with replaceable gears.
This is a good reason to install a 90 horsepower 4A-F engine in my opinion. There are many questions about how more than 90 horsepower with stock gears will take its toll on the transmission over time. Hopefully 3A-C Power can help us by making those custom gears and syncros.

Yeah the 4A-F I am talking about is the carbureted 90 horsepower one. It looks like the only hindrance with this engine though is that as far as I know the intake is high and the distributor hangs out far onto the firewall so I guess unless you're really determined to do something like this, then I guess it's just cheaper and easier to transplant a 4A-FE into a Tercel 4WD as your second option from the 4A-GE.

In the '80 a semi-official team raced the Tunisia rally with Tercels. Two stock cars ans two with the 124hp 16V.
Those with strong engine broke the clutchbell.
One stock car finished in a pretty nice place despite of it's weaky engine.
