Steering ujoint is seriously getting sloppy.
How would I go about replacing it? I would assume its like replacing one on a driveshaft right? Same kinda deal?

Re: Steering ujoint is seriously getting sloppy.
sort of... The u-joints on both the drive shaft and the steering linkage have to have the staking ground or machined out, and the joint be pressed out and replaced, and restaked. Not really a DIY job (unless you are real cleaver with a well equipped home shop). The other problem is the small size u-joint in the steering shaft is not easy to find item. It seems like something can be adopted, but nothing shows up as a replacement in the catalogs. So it would take a cleaver machine shop to find something about the right size and than alter the yokes to make it fit properly (likely a lot of liability they would not want to take on). It would be nice to find a replacement u-joint with a grease fitting on it.
It is easy to remove the assembly your self, you just remove the pinch bolts (all the way) and slip the assembly up on the spline until the other end clears, and than slip it off. I always check out the condition of the steering u-joint assemblies at the local wrecking yard and buy them if they are good. Takza has found soaking the assembly in oil overnight will keep them lubed.
If you go to a wrecking yard to find spares, be aware the '83-84 are different and not interchangeable with the '85-87 steering u-joint assembly.
Good luck.

Are you kidding me? What about the ones from an earlier tercel? would they fit the 83s? Im talking like 80 or 81.Petros wrote: If you go to a wrecking yard to find spares, be aware the '83-84 are different and not interchangeable with the '85-87 steering u-joint assembly.

Whats the big difference between the two different ones for our wagons? Cause of course...theres only a 85-87 fwd with power steering in the junkyard. Well, minus the one real old one thats been there forever that i believe to be an 80-81.
Are there any other cars that would use the same shaft? Say.... a late 80s chevy nova? I guess if I ever sell this darn supercharger Ill hit up jacksons again and see what I can find.
Actually...Ill just measure the shaft size and walk around the yard till I find a match.

Check the EPC in the Parts Forum and you will probably find that the Gen II sedans use the same shaft (but DO check it - dunno for sure). Heck, maybe Gen I will work as well - but check the EPC.
