Parts search

Post by fawmaine »

I have a 1988 wagon. Rear end diagnosis is that there are some problems in the differential. My shop has suggested finding a complete rear end. What assembly years would be compatible? Are there any forum members who have stockpiled parts to rebuild the rear differential? If the parts are out there would someone be willing to talk with the shop about their needs? It might be cheaper to rebuild the differential than to replace the whole rear end. Thanks. Ned Whiting

'85-'88 used a 4.1 gear ratio. stay away from the '83-'84s because they use a 3.73 and if you mix and match the two different sizes, you'll be screwed.

also though, use the search function to find the codes that are stamped on both the 3.73 and 4.1 diffs, check yours, and THEN proceed with rebuilding or replacing yours, making sure that the new ones have the same code stamped on them. a previous owner could have swapped to 3.73s in the past, or you could wind up putting 3.73s in if you don't check, and you don't want to make more work for yourself.

i would replace the whole axle. there are lots of them at wreckers.

Thanks. I am not working on the car and will have to tell the mechanic where to look for the code and what it should read. Is the info re the codes on the forum somewhere? What would the preferred grading be for a used rear end/differential assembly?

here's one of the posts i was thinking about:

https://tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtopic.php? ... ped#p42935

just type key words like 'diff,' 'code,' or 'stamped, or combinations thereof into the search feature on the main index page of the site and you'll find lots more info on the topic too.

i'm not sure what you mean about preferred grading. do you mean how can you tell what shape a used one is in? if so, i don't know. i would just try rotating the axles and make sure it's smooth with no clunks, grinding, or otherwise questionable sounds.

The rear diffs are pretty durable in the Tercel4wd because they were designed for the corolla and they hardly ever get used since most people drive around in fwd, so a wrecking yard is a good bet. The only time they fail on a Tercel4wd if they get a leak and are run dry, or if someone swapped in the wrong front transaxle from the '83-84 with the 3.73 front diff, it will trash the rear diff. If there is a chance someone swapped in the wrong year front transaxle than you will need a 3.73 rear diff.

I have an extra 3.73 rear diff I do not have plans for that I would be happy to sell you. There is also a 4.1 rear end in the local wrecking yard I can get for you if that is what you need. You swap out the whole third member (center section), it faster than swapping out the whole axle (it takes about an hour), the center section gets you both ring and pinion, bearings and seal all set up with proper clearance. I have done it several times, I think it is easier than replacing the whole axle assembly, and if you need the part shipped, it is WAY cheaper to send just the third member assembly. You can tell if it is good by a visual inspection and checking the lash and condition of the bearings.

Have your mechanic verify you actually have the 4.1:1 front diff, or the 3.73. Than PM me and I will get you a price to ship you a diff. I can not get it for you for several weeks since I will be out of town.

Petros, Thanks for the info and the offer of the parts. I will be in touch with my mechanic this week. Did you get email I sent to you at your email address?
