I normally live in a rural area with limited access to parts, bit I'm in town for a couple of days and I'm about to drive cross-country (Washington to Wisconsin) and I'm thinking about trying to find some 14 inch rims and getting some new tires before I leave on Wednesday. I figured I should look for some rims at a junkyard, and i am wondering if they keep track of what vehicle the rims came off of? I have seen the list here for which cars have compatible rims, but how do I tell if I'm not sure what they came off? i am also wondering if anyone has a good mid priced 14 inch tire to recommend? I am about to embark on a snowy trip, but mostly I drive around the west coast including a good amount of time on dirt roads. I am thinking that I wouldn't mind slightly larger than stock tires, so I am also curious to know what sizes work well for you all? And one more thing, i want to do the rotors (which seem warped) and I am wondering, since I am headed to the junkyard anyway, if there is any way to switch the braking system to something a little more substantial, like off a newer tercel or a corolla? Is it possible to just bolt in bigger calipers from a different vehicle? Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Re: New wheel/tire size help needed asap
petros has done a lot of work modifying the front brakes, here is the comprehensive thread on that. apparently it's a bit of work but well worth it. i personally have had no problems with the stock brakes so this isn't something i'm planning on doing.

i run 185/80/R13s on mine but know that some guys run 195/70/R14s which would be just a bit wider but about the same overall tire height. you shouldn't have any rubbing issues with those sizes but you probably will if you go any bigger. sorry i don't know any brands to recommend, i just hit the used tire place and find sh*t that has lots of tread and is cheap.
most wrecker places that know what they're doing will know what wheels came from what vehicle so ask for the specific ones you want. if they don't know and you need to measure, the measurement you need is 4 x 100 mm. i haven't heard of anyone needing to trim wheels or fabricate spacers for any wheels but it's something you might have to do if you go with something funky.
good luck!

there is a list of wheels that fit our cars on here somewhere. not sure if you checked through the search? basically most 4x100mm bolt patterns will do. I picked up some black steelies of the 14" variety from a 2002 corolla for $1 off ebay and I can recommend for road the HangKook Silica tyres personally - great rolling resistance and very quiet. Good in the sand as well but I wouldn't use them off road much. Another idea is to use light commercial tyres for off road and dirt as they are really strong and long lasting. Always a compromise whichever way you go.

If you scroll to the bottom of this page it has a partial list of cars that have a 4 x 100mm bolt pattern. Keep in mind this was made a few years ago so it's prolly omitting some newer cars with that bolt pattern.

It's a scientific fact that in a twin engine aircraft, when one engine fails there is always enough power in the remaining engine to make it all the way to the crash site.
Re: New wheel/tire size help needed asap
Don't forget to check the center bore diameter too. just cause the bolt pattern is the same does not mean they will fit.

Re: New wheel/tire size help needed asap
I made purchased a set off 14 x 5.5 alloy rims from a pick a part . Put 194 x 65 14 s on them .
As you can see in the photos thay look like the offset would suit a FWD . Thay even came off a FWD car.
It was a Renault 20 l think. I even tryed them on a corolla , thay seemed to look fine.
Once fitted to my car thay change the front end in the way it drove.
Taking off at the lights the front off the car would lift (launch it salf) and it seemed to wander around on the road.
In the end l had to take them off. Thay had too much off set But to look at them thay looked almost flat.
You win some , you lose some
