WTB: engine shock absorber

Post by dlb »

hey, i've been looking around here and haven't been able to find one of the little shock absorbers for the engine that still works. if anyone happens to be at a scrapyard and come across one, would you grab it for me and ship it up here? just let me know how much it is with shipping and i'll send a cheque.

thanks,
dlb

Good luck. I got the last one from Toyota a while back. The new unit, probably 15 years old new stock, didn't last long. It started weeping after about 2k miles and doesn't seem to functioning properly.

I'm about to try some of the other home made designs soon.

I now have almost 2K miles on my mod and it still pleasantly surprises me.
While I am quite happy with the use of the Dodge/Mitsu spring bushings, I'd try it with the shock bushings only first, if for cost alone, let alone the ease and simplicity of using the threaded rod/surrounding tube as mentioned in my thread.

It is interesting that the OE damper that SynthDesign failed so soon. I would not have expected it - I guess the seals (?) had just deteriorated after being on a shelf for almost 30 years?

yeah, that is wild that your new shock gave up so quickly, synth. oh well, i've driven other tercels that didn't suffer from the same clutch chatter (i think that's what petros called it) so i'm sure there are still some good used engine shocks around. but yeah, if it comes down to it i'll mess around with making my own.

one of the shocks i took off another '87 had the same 15040 # so it looks like the # changed with the later year tercels. i had my friend search for both #s though and nothing turned up.

Well poop! I did the same thing toughtercel did with stock pilling a few and both of the spares I had left a oil stain in the cardboard box and have no resistance.
Every one I have is labeled 12307-15030.

Guess I should've stored it at up right position instead of laying flat . might help or not .
What does this really do even we have rubber motor mount in first place .

The dampener keeps the engine from making harsh jerks up and down during acceleration or braking. This mostly happens because we have a longitudinally mounted engine and trans in a fwd/4wd platform. If we had a separate front transfer case with dual drivelines, this wouldn't be as much of an issue.

are these shocks used on the fwd tercel with the longitudinal engine? What do the more powerful rwd and 4wd cars and trucks Toyota makes (like the GTS or the pickup) use on them their engine mounts? Can we fit some truck mounts perhaps to the tercel?

These were used on all Gen I and II Tercels, whether 2WD or 4WD.
I recall looking at North-South Corollas and other sedans and trucks some years ago and, while the memory could be a bit faulty, am pretty sure these were used only on the first two Gens, because of the tall engine/trans mating.

called tokico in CA today to see if they could hook me up but the dude on the phone was adamant that this was a "dealer" part and they couldn't possibly match it with a similar shock. he didn't search the part # because he said the # is totally different from the part #s they use and that was as far as he was willing to go.

i've talked to some 4AC guys and apparently the 4AC did not have the engine shock.
