Does the automatic tranny on these cars run off of vacuum? It runs great when when you shift through the gears manually. I'm thinking maybe the tranny runs off of vacuum cause it will not gear down when in drive at WOT.

I found what it was. Automatics have a rod that connect to the bell crank on the throttle and run down to the tranny. I had forgot to hook it back up

Yeah, that sounds really low. It sounds like you may have a vacuum leak somewhere. A great way to test is to idle your motor and spray small amounts of carb cleaner at various vac connections. If you hear the engine RPMs increase after shooting a given area, then you know that you've found the source of a vac leak. Come prepared with appropriately sized new vac line, hose clamps and possibly even some superglue!

I recently found a slight vacuum leak at the base of my gas filter. A small amount of superglue fixed it up nicely!

Hooking up your timing advance will certainly help increase fuel economy during low load conditions (hwy cruise, idle, etc). However, you shouldn't be getting ~18 mpg even without proper vacuum advance. Check for vac leaks, make sure your timing is in the range of 10 deg advanced without the vacuum advance hooked up and around 15-20 deg advanced with the vacuum advance line hooked up (there are lots of recent threads on this topic).

If this doesn't help you fuel economy, then start looking elsewhere (clogged filter, tire pressure, new cap/rotor/plugs/plug wires, etc). Pulling your plugs to inspect the color can also help describe other problems.

Good luck.
