i POSTED THIS ON THE OTHER TERCEL SITE TOO:
just bought an 85 4x4 tercel and I drove it a few times and noticed the gas mileage was aweful (14.4mpg).
Its been cold here (20s) and when I drive the car if I pull up to a redlight it will sputter out a die and then it takes for ever to get started again.
When I start it in the mornings, it idles and tries to die for a while and if i dont let it warm up for like 15 minutes when i put it in drive it will die if i dont keep the rpms high....that seems to be the only way to keep it running....revving it up.
I bought a coolant temperature sensor with hopes it might fix it but I havent installed it yet....any thoughts???
HERES A REPLY I GOT:
I dought it would be the coolant sensor but I could be wrong, pretty sure its not though. its simple carb or is it a computer controled carb? One reason for that really bad MPG could be the 15min worm up time you been giving it:yikes:.
What color is the smoke out the back when you start it?
and what color is it when you let it run for 15min?
Was it doing this to the guy who owned it before you and did anyone work on or take apart the carb before?
How does it act when you go WOT or are just cruzing around town? Does it ever run smoothly or fine?
Just need some clearing up. and can you make a vid and post it?
Also we gotta get pics up man comeon I love those old 4X4's!:thanx:
MY REPLY:
Its an electric carb im sure... Ive never really looked to see what color smoke it is...the guy i bought it from lived in a warmer place and i dont know if he had any trouble like this...he didnt say of course he was trying to make a sell.... If you go from idle to WOT it will try to die...It never runs like it should no matter how long its driven...I took off the breather to see if maybe some of the vaccum hoses were missing but there wasnt...there was an alunimun type hose that connects to the bottom of the breather and to the block that was just barely on....the guy i bought it from did have a new engine put in but he had it done at the toyota dealership...I have all the paper work on it from everything ...he always took it to the dealership

if you never smell gas in the car or out , its probably is not leaking gas
if thats the case its most likely a bad carburator
either rebuild it or get another one at a wrecking yard
carb kits are around 24.00

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

is the connection between the exhaust manifold heat shield and the air filter housing intact?
its usually a piece of flexible hose made out of paper and foil and its about 1-1/4 - 1-1/2" in diameter
if its missing or not connected the carb can ice over in cold weather
one way to find out if its icing over is to drive it and when it runs like crap but runs better when you floor the gas (kicking in the un-iced secondary throttle) stop the car and quickly pop the hood and pull the top off the air filter housing
then look into the primary side of the carb (passenger side) and see if there is ice down there covering everything
